Need to strip and paint the doors this week. Scared of breaking these original door plugs. Is there a trick to removing them safely?

They are polyethylene, so they aren't brittle.

You might slide a single edge razor blade under each side and pull/pry out. Watch your fingers and what will happen if the razor blades slip. I keep an old paring knife handy in the garage and that would work for this (and be safer). The goal is NOT to use a screwdriver and leave a hack in the side of the plug.

you can find soft and hard plastic door trim tools for a few bucks for a set. I have both of these.

I had my window and frame out already and used a heat gun to soften them and my fingers in through the window slot to push out. If you open the vent window all the way, the door frames will come out without removing the plugs.

Heat gun worked well. Thanks to all that replied.
