Been (very) slowly prepping for my (multi-year) camping trailer build, and been wanting a Dometic for it. Chose that over one of the electric fridge/freezers for a couple reasons, one was that I wanted to minimize the amount of juice required to run when out in the woods, and liked the flexibility a Dometic offers (propane or 110v in this case). I understand the limitations (no quick freeze) but this won't be required to be a sub zero freezer.

Dometic's should be cheap, right? They rarely break down and have been around forever. Yet watching Craigslist in my area turned up few, most of those:
A) Way too large.
B) Way too much.
C) Broken.
D) All of the above.

Incidentally, who pays $150+ for a busted Dometic?

Anyway, one popped up for $35 on Craigslist today. Called on it the minute I saw it and happened to be the first caller on it. The guy had half a dozen calls on it within half an hour after I called.

Drove over there, picked it up. He states it works (was using it right before I picked it up, the fins inside were still cold), but haven't tested it myself yet.

I'm thinking it might get painted. But maybe not. The floral pattern is pretty cute.

So the big question I have is....anyone got any ideas on how to remove a strong "medicinal" smell? (Yeah, there's a reason why it was $35.) And by strong I mean I can smell it from across my ~900 sq foot garage. With the door shut (fridge door, not the garage door).

Though I'm sure that none of you would ever know how to get rid of a strong medicinal smell.

(And if any of you suggest patchouli oil...I will find where you live, drive to your house, and douse the interior of your truck with it. )

Give coffee grounds a try. People use it to mask smells when transporting things. As a result, I believe dogs are trained to sniff it out as well.

Was hoping to more eliminate than mask it. As it is, I could never bring brownies to a run. Or maybe I should..... :hhmm:

But, yeah, that was a fun drive home, since one of the Sheriff K9 units lives less than 5 minutes away from me (see him driving around all the time) and the main Sheriff HQ is less than 5 minutes on the other side of me.

"Well you see officer.....I just bought this fridge. Why no officer, I have no idea why it smells like the mary-jew-wanna. Well I don't think it was stolen...."

Trap a skunk?

Oh, you said eliminate, not mask.

Dear Heloise?

fwiw, those door panels are usually an insert. Can remove and replace them with something else at will.

apple cider vinegar and baking soda It is what we use to take the skunk spray off the dogs. it works on fur anyhow.....smell of vinegar is gone w/in a couple days.

Try Ozium Air Sanitizer. That stuff works pretty darn good for me when trying to get rid of smells. You can get it at most auto stores or online, maybe even at Walmart...and it's cheap.

Thanks. I'll try both of these (probably all at once!).

X3 wipe it out with white vinegar at least a few times . Leave the door open for awhile to air it out and then run it with about 4 open boxes of ARM and HAMMER

We lived in apartments for many years before getting a house. The fridges ALWAYS stank when we moved in.
This works in 99% of the cases;
Wash with a strong bleach water mix
Rinse well
Wash with a strong solution of baking soda and water
Rinse well
Let the unit dry with the door open, if it still smells after drying repeat the steps above.

We moved into student housing one time and the fridge had been turned off and shut all summer. New life forms were evolving in that sucker. It took a couple of wash / rinse cycles to get it odor free.

BTW I think that front panel slides out if you want to change the look.

go to your local pet store & buy some of the charcoal they use to filter aquarium water.spread it on a couple plates and shut it inside with the fridge running. The charcoal will absorb the odor. Worked awesome for me on a nasty stinky fridge.

Try washing it out with PBW (powdered brewers wash). I use it for my homebrewing and it cleans with no smell, and no residue. I've had good luck removing odors from water bottles, and an old fridge with it.
