I looking to horse trade a gun and possibly some parts for an oem fj40 power steering box. I'm too much of a pussy(cat) to sawp out those brackets and deal with any BS. I just want to bolt it up and roll.

What are they worth in good used condition? I don't want to short change my buddy on this deal and thought about throwing in my mini-truck box and dorry bracket to sweeten the pot? what do you all think? I'm quite sure this thing is in good shape and I think I could rebuild it easily with oem parts if need be.

I'm still a little dissatisfied with the pulley off a volvo pump as it's not as wide as I'd like.

Steering shafts will prevent it from being a 'bolt in' deal...

I was afraid of this Poser. thanks as you seen to be the only one to point this out. I thought I can across this during some research a while back. The shaft needs to be lengthed or shortened? I think I'm better off droppingin the mini-trcuk box at this point. I research the value of my little ruger I was going to trade only to find it is a first year production and worth much more than I originally thought. Needless to say I'm keepin the little plinker.

I don't know what year your rig is, but I just did this PS setup on my 1974 FJ40. I got the FJ40 steering box for $50 in really good shape. It was nice that it bolted right up to the stock pedestal and I was able to use the Pitman arm that came on it.

As Poser points out, your existing steering column (assuming you have a rag joint 2 part column) ends up being exactly 1" too long. You only have to remove 7 bolts to pull the steering column out. 2 on the rag joint, 3 on the firewall and 2 under the dash. Once its out you can take a hacksaw or sawzall and cut the end of the steering shaft off right where the shaft goes from narrow to wide, right at the top of the existing part that bolts to the rag joint. If you measure, that is exactly 1" up from the end of the shaft. You can buy the replacement CNC machined end from JTO for $50. Slide that joint end on so it is flush with the shaft where you cut it. Have a competent welder weld both the top and the bottom of the fitting to the steering shaft. It will fit perfectly and bolt right in like stock.

The only issue I had with this conversion was finding the 14mm x 1.5 return line fitting that goes into the steering gear. They are very difficult to find. I ended up pulling one out of the steering gear on a 1983 Dodge D50 pickup (made by Mitsubishi) and it fit perfectly.

I've parted out two FJ40's w/ factory PS, a 79 and an 81. In both cases the entire PS setup (box, column, hoses, pump & bracket) sold for >$500.

If you can get an FJ40 PS box in any condition for less than $100, it's a deal.
