We are planning to get a dog for the family and I was wondering how and where it can ride in the FJ40 Land Cruiser.
I know many members have dogs and some do take them into their trips.
How do you this? What are your dog's accommodations in the Land Cruiser?
Did you do any modifications?
Please share your ideas and pictures, as I'm puzzled where can I fit full family with the dog...

Danny might know,he got a lot of them dogs...he will most likely come here to talk to you anyway..

A lot depends on the dog. Some are content to ride in the back so long as they can access the driver door window and drool on the driver's shoulder but most insist upon sitting on the front passenger seat with the window down.

Many people find that installing a power window system is appreciated by their dogs. Using the window crank is so difficult with only a paw.

A short lease attached to the upper middle of the roll bar works well when topless. Keeps them from jumping out when I'm in the store for a minute or when wild critters appear nearby.
A short horse lead, like used in horse trailers, 24", with hooks on both ends.

I drive the FJ40 with no top and no doors but with a back solid gate and my Portuguese Water Dog just sits in front seat and occasionally wanders to the back seat and hang out. Normally, she goes apesh%t when we see other dogs, squirrels, etc, but when she gets in the car, she just chills. Even at lights when there is a dog in another car, she just chills. I hold on to her collar at lights just in case. With our new Puli pup, I will put on her Kong harness which has a nice handle on top.

I made a padded center console for dogs. It has hinges and slips in/out in 10 seconds.

PWD ready to go somewhere. Anywhere, she doesn't care where.

Chillin in the back at 50mph.

Well training pup is use to hanging out on the rear floor in my 40. In my 45 we will put his dog crate in the bed on long trips.
Non issue.

My mom's dog love riding along in the 40. She's pretty well trained that when we stop for gas or something she doesn't jump out as long as someone is around the rig. She usually stays in the front when the top is off. When the top is on she roams around a bit more.

I drove "Hole in the Rock" trail with two Akitas in the back of my topless 40. 210 lbs between the two.
I just let them out for the gnarly parts. My dogs go everywhere with me....maybe that's why I don't
get the first tier invitations :). I always took a 40 from '78 to '98 them I jumped to a 55 series. The wagons are a dog's best friend. Today I drive a 60 most the time

It will be a learning experience for me and my dog Buick (english mastiff)... he absolutely loves the outdoors (which is kind of weird since he's pretty timid about everything else), but the open top will be an adventure.... with that said, I plan on a soft net in the back to keep him inside while he gets used to it. I have concerns about a leash-to-cage arrangement because if (heaven forbid), I ever rolled the rig; he'd likely end up between the cage and the ground or hanging by his neck.

I should mention that he isn't used to the '40, but I've had 8 and the dogs that were in the various ones all rode inside without leash or kennel.... that said, Washington requires dogs to be restrained inside and the police have gotten a lot more aggressive in this issue (to which they have a valid point)... so the newness is the "how to safely restrain" not dogs in '40s... I honestly can't imagine life without a pooch (and my current one is sleeping on my feet - all 180 lbs of him)...

If he doesn't stay in place, I've built several K9 kennels for rigs - and that would be the other choice. It's a last choice because it really limits the usefulness of the vehicle....

In my particular case it can be more complicated as some members discribing... I have family of 5: two adults up front plus tree kids on the back seat. Trying to think how and where can I fit 70-90 lbs dog as well...

I don't see how you could fit 5 people and any large breed dog into a 40 - if you do it's not going to be comfortable for anyone , especially the dog . My GSD rides with me most of the time , sits in the passenger seat and occasionally lays down in the back - they do need some room to move around . I'd almost have to say a 60 or 80 is more of what you'd need , but that loses the charm of the 40 ....
I'm sure one way or another you could work it out , just have to be creative .

You could take a lesson from Mitt Romney, as long as you're not planning to run for office anywhere:
