has anybody tried one of these? my lab found out about 2 months ago that he can clear our 6 foot fence and does so on a daily basis. i extended the front and back fences so he can't jump over them, but now he jumps over into the neigbors yard to play with their dog. i don't really want him doing that and was contemplating getting a shocker fence. he hasn't responded to any other type of discipline for doing this yet, which sucks becuase so far he has been easy to train. i have heard that shock collars don't work for some dogs, but he isn't very stubborn and is a huge wuss, so i think a small shock would deter him. i was just wondering if anybody has had any experience with one of these?

ive never heard of shock collar not working. give the sound then the shock. most people i know have only had to shock ONCE then sound gets them every time.

unless your talking about the shock collar of the electric fence? (der) umm sometimes that doesnt work. probably not intense enough

electric fence

I've used on on my dogs after a while you can turn it off. They won't go near the wire.

Beware though I does hurt them. I felt guilty, but a little shock is better that finding my dog ran over out on the county autobaun.

so which ones did you guys use? there are ones from 100 bucks on up to 350. i would rather buy the cheaper one, but if it is going to be a pos i will pony up the extra coin.

We've used Innotek very successfully. Don't have personal experience with other brands. Stops our 85# Purebred Stray with long thick coat (took 3 run throughs for him to learn). Neighbors had a 110 # malamute, tried a collar fence (I don't know what brand) that it seemed to just ignore. They gave up on it. Might have been the brand, or maybe they didn't get long probes, shave him, etc.

If our fence goes off for whatever reason, our dog will figure it out after a few days, so we can't just forget about it and turn it off indefinitely.

I've used them successfully on my Chow and Lab. The Lab will get out if there are small animals that she can chase...she can tolerate the shock of two collars. The most important thing is to train them on the sound/shock with a leash. I use the Pet Safe branded one.

I've got a petsafe cost me $300 canuck bucks, that my danes just ignore...and yeah i tried it on my hand and it feels like stickkin yer finger in a light socket. I couldn't find any longer probes. I'll figure out a price if you are interested, I still have a bunch of extra wire...most of the flags got mowed over though:rolleyes:

I went with the invisible fence

Why did I go this $$$ route the install in my rocky yard would have been a PITA. I have a weimarauner and after that electric fence was installed my life has changed.
No more leash no more going outside at night in the rain to hold the leash. We do have the one that beeps then shocks and it works better than I could have hoped.
I do recomend the flag training. The dog will not go near the wire.

Come on, be truthful--how many of you have tried out that collar yourself? On your nuts? :D

I tried a bark collar and growled. It beeped, then I was about to laugh about how weak it was, then - - Z A P ! !

I no laughie after that.

well if you do this with the fence i would put the wire a short distance away from the fence he is jumping. If you put it in the right place then right before he jumps he will get shocked and won't jump. If you put it directly at the fence then on his way over he will get shocked but will still make it over the fence.

A friend of mine turned to the the shock collar for her dog because she'd just had one run over on the nearby highway (they live on a small farm). Before she would put the collar on the dog she tested it on her own leg at each strength. Then she was confident the dog would not be unduly hurt.

I'm not saying they're harmful--shocks like that are more startling than anything else. I just wanted to know who tried it on their nuts. :flipoff2:

I use a cattle fence unit I got from the local feed store. It's good for up to 8-miles and works on cows. These units are much cheaper than the "pet-friendly " ones and very effective.

I've heard of some dogs that ignore the shock collar, and the invisible fence.

Our dogs know when it's on and when it's off. I use it to keep my lab from getting into the garden and stealing tomatos now, but used to have the yard lined with it. String it up, turn it on, then stick their wet cold nose on it...they won't go with in 20 feet of the thing again.

Of course, this can back-fire, I loned it to a friend and after she got it working and "introduced" it to the dog...it wouldn't even go in the back yard for a week. The dog even s*** on the back step, the mutt would not step foot in the back yard, I guess some mutts are more sensative than others.

What kind of dog eats tomatos?

That's no manly kinda dog....:flipoff2:

That might be some kind of kinky sex thing. I'm sure someone's tried it. Testimonials anyone?

Shock Fence

We had a underground fence. It worked OK on our small dog, but not our German Shepherd. We even had the stubborn dog collar. It's alot stronger and had the long prongs. He would stay in until he got real excited, and then he'd just take the shock. I would even drag him back slowly across the fence, but it just didn't bother him.

I shocked myself with both, the big collar hurt considerably more than the small collar.

My wife heard rumors of the collars malfunctioning and shocking dogs all the time. So we fenced in the yard.

Now the same dog that never got out with the collar digs out from under the fence.

Obviously , you've never had a lab. They will eat anything and everything.

Our labs were raised with goats and picked up some bad habits. I think they saw the goats eating parts of my '63 and figured they should try it too...
