My wife called me at work yesterday. She was all shook up, trying to tell me about the dog.(We dont have kids so the lab gets all of the attention) She was traveling in her 80 on a very busy four lane hwy with the dog's head out of the window. We dont roll the window all the way down but enough for her to stick her neck out. Well the Mrs. had to make an emergency lane change and out went Bumpie. She rolled across the left lane then skidded into the center turn lane. The driver following her screatched to a stop then turned to block traffic. If I new who he was I would be buying him alot of beer!! The Mrs tried to go pick her up but Bumpie ran back to the truck on her own. I met her at the house to check out the dog and all was fine! Scared the sheet out of my wife  . Bumpie never missed a beat  We are just going to crack the window enough for her to stick her nose out from now on.

I open the back sliders for my lab - not big enough for her to get out easy, up higher with the seats removed. You got lucky - had a buddy whose chow came out the same way...now has a gimp front leg...

Glad to hear that your dog is good.

I hope all is well long-term with the mutt. I bet she won't be stick'n her head out near as far now. Jesterb, you might want to check for internal bruises or bleeding.

I'm glad to hear everything seems o.k. Wow, that would have been scary!

Good Luck

My chow jumped out the window with my wife driving. She was only backing out of a driveway at the time but it scared the sheet out of her as well.

Glad to hear your pooch is OK.

You need to get one of those thingies that secures their harness to the seatbelt. like a seatbelt for dogs :) Glad to hear the pup is ok.. might want to watch it pee and poop to make sure there is no internal damage..

I used to worry about that all the time. My lab has gotten pretty used to riding in the 80 now. I mostly use the rear sliding windows, and he loves them. He rode in the back of a Tundra this weekend. It was his virgin pick-up truck ride. He was a little spooked at first but then just laid down and loved it.

God bless fur. If she didn't hit anything solid, she probably is okay. Like the others said, keep an eye out--run your hands all over her, checking for strains, breaks, and possible internal injuries. (Oh, that works good for the wife, too!)

Oh, "Bumpie"...I get it!!!!...........

Lucky Dog.

I doubt she'll head toward any cracked open window after that!...

Flex was cruisin' down the highway with us one day, head out the back window, when my g/f decided to roll down the window more for him; she accidentally rolled it up and through apparent disbelief she couldn't take her finger off the switch. (Either that, or she was trying to kill my pooch.)..

Anyway, Flex always looks at a window and "motion checks" it before he sticks his head out now. Pretty amusing.

Glad Bumpie didn't go "Thumpie"...

I watched her do her thing this morning, all was good. Last night I made her do all of her tricks. Seemed fine there too. What does one need to look for when getting a seatbelt harness for the dog?

Beau fell out of the 80 once. He is REAL good and can anticpate my turns, if I turn left he goes left, kinda bounces......but one day I ziged when he thought(and so did I) I would zag......he came out the back driverside window.........I wathced him fly thru the air.....he actaully looked back at me :(........then landed and rolled.......poped right up and jumped back in the 80........not a mark on him. Some asshat stoped and yelled at me........for Beau falling out.........like I wanted him to!!!!! asshat has been getting fliped off everyday sense then.

it was actaully like the 80 went out from under him.......now its funny.....but then......man did I feel bad..........but it for sure didn't scare him from riddin with me....I know leave the window up a bit, he is BIG so he can't fit thru ;)

SOrry to hear about him falling out.....but glad he is OK

Glad to hear the woggie is ok. Funny how tuff they can be.
I've run over 2 dogs with 4-5000lb truck and both lived. One ever walked away, well, limped, but seemed to be ok. Amazing.

Sounds like you need a bigger dog

I've got a 160lb Saint Bernard and she wouldnt even think of getting through the window of our 4Runner, let alone falling out. She loves to ride in the 40, but I have noticed other drivers getting out of the lane behind us. Guess they dont like turning on the wipers for slobber showers. Shes never come close to jumping out of the 40, but I do run her leash around the roll cage, just so she can get to the tailgate, but not over it. Hodag

Man yall got some wimpy dogs!

My buddies Llewellyan (sp) setter rides on the back racks of our atv's!

He stays on through 40 mph jumps, turns, powerslides- the whole deal. (not strapped in or anything)

glad all is well...my buddy dean's dog jumped out the window of his car when they were leaving the house and his head went under the rear wheel...still bright, but not quite right.

Careful with the seatbelt/leash thing. If the dog still goes out the window, it'll hang itself.

It's amazing to see in the rural areas around here the farm dogs curled up on the back of a flat bed pickup going 75mph down the road.

When my chocolate lab Malteser (Malti for short) was a pup, I tried to train her to ride in the back of my 40 by taking slow laps around a parking lot. She kept jumping out, so I tried tying her in with her leash, leaving just enough so she could move around, but not jump out. That worked until she decided to jump for it. She hung herself over the side for a couple seconds until I could stop and put her back in. I think that scared her though because she's never done it since. I keep the leash a little tighter now on the highway, but even on the trail when she's not tied in, she just sleeps. Live and learn.

A couple years back my chocolate lab fell out of my 60 when I went around a sharp corner at about 25mph. Sucker landed on all fours and jumped right back in. Needless to say that day I went out and bought a "dog harness". It has straps that go just fore and aft of his front legs so it is around his chest and not his neck. So incase he does go out again it supports him and dosn't choke him. There is also an adjustable lead that just clips into the rear lap belt so you can keep him where you want to.

The thing I dont understand is how some people can put their dog on their flat bed truck and do 80 down the highway. Crazy.

If my wife knew this she would give me a "see I told you so!". We keep the dog in the back with the slider open just enough for him to stick his head out. I don't think the shoulders would pass through and it seems high enough that any sudden move wouldn't eject the dog.

Glad it all turned out OK.
