We have an 8 year old lab x sheperd that likes to head out to her pen and feast on the poop out there. She's an inside dog and poops in a dog run beside the house and, before someone says it, we keep the pen very clean and at most you'll find two or three turds out there before we pick it up. There are pills you can give the dog to discourage poop eating but they're very expensive since the dose depends on the dogs weight (100+ pounds). Any suggestions? I'm tired of here bringing in s*** in her mouth and the thought of her licking my kids makes me sick. ....Steve

My dog used to love "poopie treats". Yelling, shaming, and the occasional spanking has cured her of her poop cravings. Of course that means that all rec time must be supervised until she quits eating poo.

Uhh, wow. No, not really.

I've had problems with dogs eating cat s*** before, but not their own. That's just sick. (Not that eating cat s*** is acceptable mind you, I'm just sayin')

I've read dogs do that because it's similar to when they're being weaned by their mothers, the mother will eat food, partially digest it, then puke it up for the puppies to eat...

guess it reminds them of the good old days or something???

I don't know what to tell you.

the standard answer is to mix meat tenderizer in her food, and she'll stop eating the poop --

-- give it a try -- :D

My malamute does this. Some say it's because they are lacking nutirents in their diet. Whatever, my dog probobly eats better than I do.

I tried the pills. They didn't work at all, BTW.

My dog only eats them when they are frozen, and then he will hold them in his paws and LICK them like a poop-cicle until gone.

The only remedy we've found is to pick up the poo after every evening walk. Eliminate the source of the temptation all together.

I'm tempted to try the meat tenderizer but the smiley at the end of your post makes me nervous. Will it work or are you trying to give my dog a case of explosive diarrhea?

Mine eats them more often when frozen as well. She will rarely do it during the summer and goes in waves during the winter but lately has been doing it almost every time she goes outside unless I go with her and give her s*** each time she drops her head to grab a piece. It's driving me nuts and if she keeps it up she'll end up being an outside dog pretty soon.

maybe, if he doesn't stop, just maybe, in the interest of the kid(s) - would it be an idea to get rid of the dog?

Have you been feeding her the same dog food all this time? Might want to try a few different brands and see if it tastes different coming out.

She's been eating the same brand but changed over the summer to an older dog formula at the vet's suggestion.

I don't really want to taste it coming out but if you think it will work I'll head outside now.

When she does it that's the first thought in my mind but realize it probably would never happen. I'm keeping her until she starts pissing in the house, then she's gone. I would hope I can figure something else out instead of getting rid of my best friend over a little s*** eating. ....Steve

When taken out of it's context, this is excellent sig line material. :D

FWIW, my dog pissed in the house the first three days we had him. We still have him.

Focker pissed DOWN the air vent up stairs, and IN my stereo sub-woofer.

He got house trained in a hurry. A two year old Malamute has quite the 'reach' when letting loose.

Can you divide the pooping area in 2? Maybe just keep her in one half to poop then move her to the clean side.

Not really as she has her own stairs off the deck in to her dog run. We do keep the area very clean though so she usually doesn't have more than that days or sometimes the night before's offerings to choose from but sometimes I swear she unloads, turns around and begins the feast.

Ours did it a few times when she was a puppy but hasn't in 8 years other than when we left her with a pet sitter and she was mad at us. Once she loses bladder control due to age though I'll sadly have her put down. I figure she's a proud dog and when she starts being a pisser I'll end it so she doesn't spend her life humiliated and I won't have to resent her in her last days. I'm not keen on letting her be miserable for a year or two while she falls apart and wrecks our house in the process. ....Steve

This thread is making me ill...

But I just can't stop reading as I hope there will be a happy ending.

If you think reading the thread makes you sick you should come clean up my floor after she visits the s*** buffet and then pukes on the carpet. :crybaby:
