Does and donts of replacing windshields

There's been dozens of threads in this forum over the last 15-20 years about leaking replacement windshields (80 Series Land Cruisers), all due to either the installer using no adhesive-sealant, or not applying it correctly. Also been discussed that the correct type of Adhesive-Sealant is required in order to keep the windshield attached to the vehicle in the case of an accident including a roll-over ie: how it moves in a crash (ie not flying out) is considered in crash testing.

Happened to me twice in an 80 Series (leaking after installation); first time the installer used no sealant, leaked like a sieve. Second time they sent out two installers, they used sealant but didn't use it correctly, leaked again. Third time I took it to an independent 1-2 man shop (no front office, you dealt directly with the guy who was doing the work). I chose him because the local dealers (Toyota, Lexus, Mercedes) used his shop for new and higher end vehicles on the lot that needed a windshield replaced, perfect.

The National chain that screwed it up twice paid for the new OEM windshield (when they were still available), total charge; $1100 paid by them. The National chain also reimbursed me (a bunch) for damage to the vehicle (which I fixed). As mentioned above, the rust came back after a dozen years or so.

FWIW there's been Class-Action lawsuits for improperly installed windshields including IIRC a large government fine for a National chain ?? decades ago that was not installing windshields using the factory approved method.

You can’t not use sealant with the OEM seal. If you didn’t use sealant and it’s not leaking then it hasn’t had a good downpour on it yet.
This is pure opinion masquerading as fact.
As I stated before I've replaced at least two dozen screens on 60s/80s, with no leaks and I'm certain they've all seen plenty of rain. One of my 60s and both my 80s were outside back in January when we got 4 inches in 35 minutes, I think that qualifies as a downpour, not a drop in any of them.
As stated before, new seal, soap and a clean frame, no issues. New or old seal with old sealant on the frame will leak.
Or maybe H2O molecules are just bigger and less sneaky than North American ones.

Post a pic of the seals you are using.

I've successfully installed the old rope in style seals back in the day in 70's era vehicles.

However, Toyota designed the seals to be installed with sealant. I'd be following this procedure.
The only reason not to is sealant cost a few $, and is potentialy messy.

@DUSTandRUST
I'd also like to see the FSM procedure for replacing the DX model's windscreen.that you mention

I bought a new seal ready to change my windshield at some point. The glass is poured, and there's a touch of rust visible around the edge of the seal.
I bought the seal that doesn't have a chrome trim insert.

My 80's front glass still needs doing (I've put up with the existing not-oem one now for 13 years with all it's chips and many years of 'dirt drag' wear from wiper blades) and I'm trying to find a good place in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie area (NSW Australia) that can do an 80 front glass properly using a genuine toyota seal and doing it as per FSM with good care not to damage the glass opening on the body (and deal with whatever pre-existing issues may arise when the old glass comes out.

I'm budgeting around A$500 - does that seem reasonable? I can get a seal (in fact I do have one that I obtained over 5 yrs ago).

What is the current (late 2024) status regarding the actual windshield glass? Oem still gone forever or was that a weird untruth?
If oem is gone, does that mean there is basically one source that all shops would-be buying from?

We were told in June that OEM glass was not available in the USA. I have no idea where ours came from.
