Does a snorkel block the view?

Interesting snorkel... hmmm... Is it just me or do you also think it might be a better design when it comes to driving into a carwash... More forced air intake perhaps :hhmm: :)

Also, Huffi, if you gonna make your own... what would be your material of choice?

Thanks for sharing...

The snorkel on the picture is made with fiberglass, I would use also use fiberglass.

I haven´t seen closeup pics of that snorkel, but I can imagine that it is 2-3 cm higher than the top of the car, and I guess that it has some holes in the lowest part in the back of the snorkel head for water to escape instead of running down the pipe.

I´m not sure if it is any better for automatic carwashing, I never use such machines anyway.

If I make one i think I want to make some sort of water trap inside the fender with a valve of some kind to empty it. My uncle built a snorkel (using PVC sewer pipes and a safari snorkel head) for his MB Vario truck. He made a water trap and he says that when he opens the valve every few weeks he gets a few drops of water coming out.

Haffi, I'm guessing with your fiberglass skills you can make something that looks even better than the roca snorkel. Who knows you might open up a whole new market...Hmmm shipping price from Iceland to Hawaii:hhmm:

Why not just offer haffi a place to crash mid winter for a week or two, Im sure with the long winters up there he might feel inclined to deliver one in person and stay for a week or two! ;)

edit: its snowing sideways here right now in calgary, I think id build one to give to you myself...

Today (after finishing everything I can do on my engine rebuild instead of sitting down to wait for the head back from the machine shop) I started the snorkel building ;)

First I waxed the top and the fender, and then without wiping the wax off I taped it off with painters tape and then some regular plastic tape.
Then I laid the first layer of fiberglass over the tape. When dried out I covered the a-pillar with tape and some foam from a old isolating camping mattress to lift the fiberglass from the pillar to allow water to escape the windshield. Then I laid a fiberglass layer between the glass on the fender and the top.

In the back I´m rising the fiberglass (about an inch) from the roof to avoid filling the snorkel with water from the roof when braking. I´m going to turn the air intake backwards to avoid catching rain and splashing water from the tires.

When I stopped this evening I had two layers covering the area from the top to the fender. My plan is that this will be the base for me to build the rest on.

I probably cant get back to work on my engine until Thursday or Wednesday so I might keep on fiberglassing tomorrow evening. I might start a new thread about this build If it goes as well as I plan ;)

wait, is it sunny there now? That's not fair. I am excited to see how this turns out Haffi.

Probably just me not looking right, but will your door still open with that fiber over it.....??

Are you going to copy your hood cowl and just face it backwards for the intake on your roof? That would look good, and would be easy to copy.

Right now I cant open the door, you are right about that. But as I mentioned this is just a base to build on so it is a bit to large.
Ofcourse I´m not welding the passenger door shut to fit a snorkel ;)

No, because if I do the snorkel will be to open, like that it will rain into it. I still haven´t figured out the final look on the top part. It will hopefully come clear in few days.

I was thinking that as long as the mouth faces backwards and have it sit up off your roof so that water could not run down into it you would be fine. on mine there are little drains right as it starts to drop down into the neck so that if any water gets in, it just runs out. Be careful though, you don't want to get any water near that new engine right?;)

Haffi,

This is an interesting thread. Sorry about the water incident. That seems to be a potential hazard we all face when crossing water.

I have a safari snorkel and I recently tore the head off it. I caught it on a low hanging branch and before I realized it was caught, it popped off. The bottom of the snorkel head was shattered. I ordered another and I have turned it backwards to ensure I don't tear it off again. You might want to consider that when designing yours. It shouldn't hurt anything to turn it backwards and you'll avoid creating a lip that might snag on something.

I remember you saying that you don't go in forests that often so this might be less of an issue for you but if I were designing it, I'd play it safe.

In Iceland they have a saying that "if you get lost in the forest, all you have to do is stand up.":)

I did some more work on this this evening.

I went to a hardware store and found these foam tubes. These were perfect for forming the tube up the pillar. I taped them together and to the car and glassed one layer over most of them.

Then I added a small strips of glass to secure them to the base. Now I could remove most of the tape and glass the area where the tape was. Then I sprayed expansion foam onto the fender and the top. I will have to add some more foam, today I should have bought two cans instead of one ;) I will take care of that in the lunch brake so It will be cured after work.

Tomorrow when the foam is cured I can shape it like I want the snorkel to look with a knife and a file and then glass over it.

Subscribed! Like you I need a snorkel although more so for our typically dusty trail conditions here in Nevada. And like you I think the RocaSilva is the best looking IMHO snorkel on the ready made market. But too darn expensive especially to the USA.

Great effort haffi! You might inspire me to do the same!

Haffi - I heard about this trip from Brent, and he's forever a Toyota Diesel fan because of you guys. I'm looking forward to this build, maybe you can send some to Seattle on the next icelandair flight so we can test them out here in the PNW
