Do you Trust Chinese Replacement Turbo's "CT26 for a 1hdt" (13 Viewers)

Way to many horror stories from the vw and diesel crowds for me to ever take the chance.... Not worth it.

If I was to put an intercooler in my truck plus a chinese turbo, would it act as a filter if the turbo did end up blowing up?

Sorry for anyone to takes ill to my statistical tendencies but.. I would like to demonstrate something about this thread....

There were a total of 41 posts to the original question. Notice there were ZERO people who had firsthand experience with a failed one and TWO who had first hand experience with ones that worked. I will let the rest of the categories speak for themselves.

However the other half of dealing with risk besides probability of occurrence is severity of realization which was touched on but not fully explored... I like the intercooler mitigation step myself...

But frankly, the only thing i will conclude from any of this is that 2 people have used them with success (hardly a good sample size) AND that there is a large majority of posts from Anti-China biased individuals who provided no supporting facts

Where i to shoot from the hip on this one, i would consider the risk to the engine as the dominating decision point on this one, being that i dont trust conjecture and speculation based opinions on these matters.

Great thread tho, the 25 general comments provided great research points of departure for me to consider in my design....

i think the general consensus is get one gone through and balanced properly.
John at ateb is running a Chinese turbo with good results after it was rebuilt and gone through just as a precaution.

Get origional bearings and rebalance it. Dont run it hard as the turbine and the shaft can separate. (<15lbs?) It is doable, but there are better quality turbos you can chose from such as this:

TD05HR-16G6-9T
twin scroll
360 thrust bearings
maps great for a 4.2L up to 3600rpm 20psi

WOW!! You need a hobby! :flipoff2:

I have no experience of the chinese turbos, but have had a genuine one explode and kill the engine. :bang::bang:

Weigh up a $5k+ rebuild (if no major components are destroyed) vs saving around $1000 on a suspect quality critical item.

I have used a Chinese CHRA in my 2LTE. for about 10k KMS now. Seems fine. actually boosts a bit earlier.
I had it for close to $200 as i just got the CHRA (that is where all the moving/wearable parts are) and reused the existing manifold and air intake parts.

I look forward to your write ups on the other new mod threads ,manifold ,pump ,inter cooler, valvebody, oh sorry no know v/b threads yet. Actually heard rumours that there might be a modded chinese v/b and manifold coming out soon.

I can just see it now "do you trust Chinese valve bodies" thread lol

Where the heck are people getting this info?

Read it somewhere...

Can you put some kind of filter between the TURBO and the inlet to intake air passage to stop a blown up Turbo buggering up a perfctly good engine interals ?? ie its costly to do a TURBO but even more to then have to rebuild a motor too!! I have no inter cooler but am about to put a new turbo om an 80 series and would like some protection for the motor ?? Surely some out there can assist me here ?? Could become a new invention or add on saftey part ??

I had a person call 2 days ago who's had 2 copy CT26's fail on his 1HD-FT and the last fail caused him to pull engine down. So, he's now buying a more expensive option.

That is first hand feedback to me anyway. At the very least you should pull them down and check all tolerances, balance etc AND not push too hard. And that should not in any way be interpreted as a reccomendation for use.

Yep, I'll make you a custom filter, guaranteed to prevent anything from your turbo entering the engine, guaranteed to prevent a $5k rebuild, you can run the cheapest piece of s*** turbo you like, so you can save a few more dollars.

Here's one i prepared earlier

I'll do you a special price, custom fitted, $999
