Hi Folks - first post here. I've lurked and read here for quite a while and learned much, but seem to have more questions than when I started. Here's the deal:

After months of threatening, my aging father has bequeathed me his 2000 100, with 185K almost all highway miles. Maintenance done by the Toyota dealer (incl timing belt), . He used the rig for birding trips locally (AZ) and back and forth to the cabin in Minnesota. Any abuse is mostly of the interior from neglect. The rig is all stock except for the big ARB front bumper he installed after forgetting to put the rig in park one day and watching it autopilot down a short hill into a Saguaro. He doesn't care whether I keep it or sell it. and it's probably worth just north of $10K in a private sale.

I realize these are awesome vehicles, and the idea of driving a 100 is certainly seductive. But I have reservations as I'm not really in a position to pony up for a new tranny or motor should the need arise. I do very little mudding and rock-crawling type four-wheeling, but 4wd is essential as we spend almost every weekend accessing the ski hill or some semi-remote roadhead to play in the backcountry.

What to do? What am I likely in for here? I've read the Slee 'check out the rig' page and this one has no major red flags at this time.

Thanks and hope to hear from yous soon.

Keep it. Enjoy it. I had 275k on my FZJ80 when I sold it. Probably still running great.

Welcome to MUD!

it's going to be hard to find a better replacement for $10K.
Yup, 185K is not the end of the road for a landcruiser with good maintenance, by a long shot. They are very reliable. If it's in mechanically good shape, you will drive it for a long time, with minimal good care.

Drive it, love it.
If it has been well maintained, there is nothing to worry about.

You can always sell it later if you cannot afford the gas for it.

At this stage, resale for this rig is stable. It's not like it's depreciating very quickly.

In fact, resale on landcruisers is less volitile than any other investment I can think of... keep it.

You found this site, you have a 100 that's barely broken in, AND it's a family hand me down so you know it's history......... and you're thinking of selling it? I say psssssh! That rig has found you! You know what to do. Enjoy! I'm gonna pass my 2004 down to my son, he's almost 5 now so it should be just about perfect for him when he turns 16!

Definitely keep it, you'll love it. If you don't, put it in the mud classifieds, someone will grab it.

just keep up the preventative maintenance and you will easily get another 185k miles in comfort and safety on your ski weekends etc. dont worry about the tranny, very low risk of it happening, and i believe it went out much earlier than 185k miles for those that had the misfortune. if you drive it this winter you will wonder how you could have ever considered passing on it!

Keep it! You'll love it, as others have mentioned on here keep up with maintenance and it will last a very long time... And like someone said, if you cant afford the gas then you can sell it!

Cheers

180k on it? Jeeze, that thing isn't worth 10k. I don't know what those guys are talking about, the thing is pretty much worthless. Tell you what, I'll pay for your beautiful, barely broken-in rust free Arizona truck to be shipped up here to Colorado, and I'll take it off your hands to properly put that beast of burden out of it's misery. ;)

All joking aside, you haven't even hit half of that trucks usable life yet. Keep it and enjoy it as a daily driver, or keep it aside for use as a road trip vehicle. Either way, selling such a good vehicle would be a shame. If you really want to let it go, post it here on mud for a decent price and make another mud member the happy owner. It would be well taken care of.

Like everyone says- keep it. Mileage is not a concern. I have 180k, and nobody that sees our rides in it can believe that it is 12 years old with that kind of miles on it. Are you in the phx area? If so, check out copper state cruisers in the club section.

Typos sent from my HTC EVO using the IH8MUD app...

Yup, like the rest say keep it!! It was designed as a 25 year vehicle, so you still have another 14 years. Think what your replacement cost would be for a snow worthy off road vehicle.

That rear drop down tail gate on the LC is the best place ever to put on your ski boots. Another great feature, putting your boots in front of the 2nd row heater so your boots will be nice and soft so they slip on easy when you hit the mountain (if you're a 2 planker).

The only potential downside would be the cost of fuel if you have a long commute to your ski mountain, but do you really want to hit the mountain in a Subaru?

Really?

If it has the kind of maintenance record as you suggest above keep it and drive it.

If nothing else, LCs are perfect ski [STRIKE]mall[/STRIKE] lift cruisers!

That's for sure.

pfran42 - I already knew who the favorite team was, I just wanted to know if it they thought it wise to keep the seasoned pitcher.

;~)
