I posted up a few weeks ago about two problems I had while installing a rebuild tranny and transfer. (I had H41 gears installed into an H42 case.)

https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/239669-rebuild-tranny-transfer-grinding-reverse.html

Thanks to Dynosaur, I replaced my "missing" transfer case shim easily and quickly.

However, I'm still working on the noise I get in reverse gear. I talked to the tranny guy who did the rebuild. He suggested that sometimes a bearing on the output shaft can need to be seated, that just pressing it on during assembly might not do the trick. He suggested that I pull off the #2 transfer cover and re-tighten the stake nut on the transmission output shaft.

That's pretty easy to do, and his explanation sort-of made sense so I gave it a shot this morning.

It did make a difference.

Before, the tranny made a sound in reverse like there were loose marbles in there.

Now, the marble sound is gone, but it growls pretty loud. None of the forward gears growl to any similar degree.

Thoughts/comments appreciated. I'm definatly exploring new territory here...

When the H41 was rebuilt were gears used from both trannies? Gears get worn together and if you mix and match then you can get noise. I know that the forward gears cannot be mixed and matched as they are different but what about reverse? I tend to think that reverse is the same ratio in both the H41 and H42 and if your mechanic though that the H42 gear looked better and used it that may be the source of your noise. If it is it will slowly become quieter as the gears wear together.

That's a very tempting solution. I have enough time/money into this I really don't want to screw it up, though, I also really want to use it. Reverse in the H41 is the same as 1st (just like in the H42) but there might be an idler gear (or similar) in common that could swap back and forth between the H41 and H42. I can see how that could create noise. I'll ask my tranny guy to see what he says.
