Hi gents,

Noticed my interior panel for the rear tailgate doesn't have a gasket on it. It's screwed on but I'm thinking if there was at once time a gasket here (PO put diamond plate on interior panels and messed with it) then i should replace it.. I'm getting exhaust fumes in the cab, and there's definitely a chance that without a good seal fumes would get in (I'm getting CO warnings from my in cab detector...

Is there a good option for sealing up this, and, other panels? Has anyone had success or seen a thread for this? obviously something skinny and low profile. Thanks

Dan

Isn't that panel you're talking about just the carpeted lower tail gate panel? I can't help you with a gasket because mine was missing so I made one out of a thin sheet material similar to the original and carpeted it with some original carpet that I had, then trimmed the edge with a vinyl like the original. I do not have any exhaust smell in my cab though.

@Beehanger No gasket that I've ever seen on any 60 tailgate panel. No gasket present on the parts diagram either, which should be the big tell. There is some foam or something under the metal access panels that screw in, but not under the original carpeted panel. Unlike the door & cargo panels, the tailgate is solid sheet metal under the panel so there's nothing to seal up. Door & cargo panel areas have cutout holes in the sheet metal behind them, hence why at least the doors have vapor barrier behind the panels. I have added a foam strip around the edge of cargo panels before, and vapor barrier might be a good addition there too - especially since most people have a little bit (or a lot) of wheel well rust that allows dirt and moisture inside that body cavity.

For what it's worth - and I don't know if your original panel is trashed or not - I make a laser cut ABS replacement for the tailgate panel. Installation takes about 10 minutes tops. Just throwing it out there. Let me know if you're interested, I'm happy to get your more info and more photos.

So the rear tailgate cover DOES NOT have any foam or anything whatsoever? I Have a strong sense it doesn't "vapor lock" and that further fumes will get in the cab unless there's some sort of squishy material, but I could be wrong. There's literally nothing in between the metal cover and the tailgate, no foam, nothing. So what can one put there, or am I just dead wrong on my intuition here?

What about replaceent gaskets for the little inspection hatch covers, and the hinges themselves? Gaskets are donzo on these I can see em, and for the ones that are decent im about to soak in degreaser.....

I'm intrigued in your product, but am strapped for cash, so may try to make what I have now work it first if possible. Although, I'll check out your store and give you my business in ways I can; Appreciate your activeness on the forum!

@Beehanger There’s no fuel in the tailgate, so there wouldn’t be any fumes coming from there. The fuel system is a sealed system anyway. If you can smell gas, there’s an issue that needs to be addressed elsewhere.

Go to Home Depot and buy foam weatherstrip for your metal covers.

Remove the passenger cargo panel and check your hoses etc for cracking, that's probably where it's coming from or check your charcoal cannister. Do you get pressure removing the gas cap? If exhaust smell, check rear floor or wheel wells for rust holes. On passenger side where filler neck connects to the tank, there is a large grommet to seal that, maybe that's gone and somehow allowing fumes

The gasket/weatherstrip is on the vehicle side around the perimeter of the opening. The picture @CruiserTrash posted shows it.

If you are getting fuel smell, absolutely check behind that panel as mentioned. Maybe also check the fuel filler neck?
