Why in the world are the newer 4runner models essentially the same size as the Land Cruisers? Back in the 90's if you wanted a 4runner it was because it got better gas mileage and was a smaller package than the Land Cruiser, now pfft. Its bigger than an FJ80, and when you compare a 2016 4Runner to a '16 LC they are almost the same size. Its absurd. All dimensions between the two 2016 models are within 5 inches or less of each other.

all in all my TLR is that we need smaller trail capable rigs back, and solid front axles again.

Well that is part of your problem, your thought process. Most people that are buying these vehicles are not purchasing them to be offroad vehicles like the old 4Runners were. They are purchased as big, mall crawlers and thus the consumer wants all the bells and whistles of those luxury models, just without the price tag associated.

I give it a few more years and/or maybe another generation before the 4Runner is no longer a body on frame vehicle. They will go to something like that highlander or venza type with sweeping body lines and other such garbage.

Same combination of reasons that new midsize trucks are the size of 20 year old 1/2 tons, and new 1/2 ton trucks are the same size as 20 year old 1 ton trucks, and a new compact sedan is the size of a 20 year old normal sedan.

More sheet metal to improve crash ratings, more places to hide side curtain air bags and other safety stuff, larger sized vehicles change the emissions requirements in the US, and most importantly, the average consumer wants everything larger because mindset is bigger=better, especially when you are keeping up with the Jones'.

They make more money with the 4Runner. That's more then likely built in the same factory as the KC for the same price.
