disc brake backing plates

picked up an disc brake axle and it dosnt have backing plates.do i need to run them or the equivalent space between the spindle and knuckle?
 
Just keep in mind there are brake bits attached to the backing plate and you will need to engineer an alternative.
 
Nothing the proper brake hose won't cure. In response to the brake bits part that is.

You do need atleast the spacer, it gives the proper shiming for the spindle.

yes i have seen alternatives,just wanted to make sure on the running some type of space or if it wasnt nessecary.thanks for the responses
