I have noticed that when my engine oil gets dirty (syn and dino) that that is when I start to use oil. The milage is usually about 2000 mi. At that piont I have to add about a qt or less.
Before it gets dirty I didn't need to add oil (execpt when I have an oil leak >:( ).
After it gets dirty I have to add a qt per 1000 mi.

First 2000 mi, no oil added and the oil is clean.
After 2000 mi the oil is dirty and uses about 1qt per 1000 mi.

I have tried Valoline,Mobil(dino), M1 (it uses lots of oil at high rpms), Chevron, RotellaT and now use RotellaT syn. They all stayed clean till about 2000 mi and then started to use oil.

Why does it do this?
Is it that the oil is braking down?
Is the additive in the oil braking down?
Is it that the oil is dirty and that couses it to use oil?

I use only Toyota oil filter.

Would using a bypass filter to keep the oil clean help?

If I send a sample to BL, would I want to do it before I add oil?
Does adding a qt, when needed, change the result of the analysis?

Just because the oil is visually dirty does not mean that it is used up, or needs to be changed. It simply means the additive package is working and carrying away contaminants from the engine.

Given your consumption issues, you should do a used oil analysis and probably also a leakdown test. I am wondering if you have sticky rings or a blowby problem.

Why would there be no oil consumption till there is about 2000 mi on the oil and then use oil at about 1qt per 1000 mi after that?

Remember, I have the motor with the varnish looking inside.
Would I want to try Motor RX stuff?

do you mean auto RX? have not tried that stuf myself but it seams to have a good reputation among BITOG members

most of the stuff in that catagory is snake oil

A leak down test is not expensive, about $100 from a mechanic. I would suspect that you are using oil in the first 2000 miles, but it is not reflecting on the dipstick (often the first 1/2 quart from full will not really show). You may be a canidate for the Auto RX, it is worth a try. You may also want to try Mobil 1 5w-40 SUV (Delvac 1) to see if that helps.

I have been using Delvac 1 for about 1k miles, so far no oil loss to early to tell for sure, I was expecting to fix an oil leak as there was oil all over the bottom of the cruiser when I bought it, but it has not used any oil, now I am not sure it just likes the thick oil of if the oil all over the bottom is from years of jiffy lube oil filter droppings running down the side of the block and being blown aft by wind
