Differences between 100 series and FJ Cruiser

prolly because very, very few of us bought 100's new off the lot. There is also a total generation difference between them. Anyway, only driven a FJ once (Toyota Trail Team event) so I can't really comment. I can say that hardly anybody that rides in my 100 believes it is 12 years old and has 180K miles on it.

This exactly why I have one of each.

I hate it when prices are brought up in these type of comparo's. Because they all end up with somebody saying you should buy a $2k pickup with $30k in mods to beat the pants out of any vehicle ever made.

Like other posters, I've got both (100 series for 8 yrs - 205k miles, and FJC for 4 yrs - 45k miles), and I enjoy both of them.

I like the FJC for its unique style and Toyota dependability (zero problems). It's a fun vehicle, but not terribly practical. Comfortable enough for travels, and amazing on the trails.

I like the 100 for its classic style and Toyota dependability (only problem has been an airbag controller). It's a practical vehicle, but not terribly fun! Most comfortable vehicle I've owned for around town and long trips.

That said, if I had to choose only one to have, I'd go with the 100.

This is a LandCruiser trademark. No SUV has a tailgate like the LC and when folks walked up to my 80 or 100, they have always said "****... you have a tailgate?".

That's not totally true. I love the split tailgate but Volvo XC90s, Range Rovers, even BMW X5s have split gates also.

We have both in our family too. A lot of good points have been made, but in our family each vehicle has a different purpose. The FJ is for off road, while the 100 is a DD for the wife's business with mild MOD's & light off roading.

And if it's raining or really sunny, I point up and say "look we have an umbrella over the tailgate too."

Daily driving: the FJC is nimble and quick enough that you can easily and quickly navigate any type of traffic, including tight parking lots, open highways, or bumper-to-bumper stop-n-go traffic with road rage on either side of you. Grip it and rip it. It has appropriately sized mirrors that make the lack of visibility a minor issue for any compotent driver and who needs mirrors when you're foot is mashed on the gas.

A LOT of people actually complain about the mirrors as they are not appropriately sized. They are too dam tall and not wide enough. Also, parking the FJ sucks due to the visibility. And i need mirrors as i don't "grip it and rip it" when i am driving.

When a 100 gets the job over obstacles, you know it got it done with confidence, braun, and class. When the FJC gets the job done, half the time I wonder how or had my hands so full I didn't necessarily get to enjoy it the same as I would with the 100.

I would say for most people, this would be the exact opposite. That the less creature comforts and the more basic a vehicle is the more you are in tune with how it is running, and with it going over obstacles. For instance, you cannot turn off ATRAC in the 100 to let YOU actually wheel the vehicle and not have traction control nannies working. You can turn it off in the FJC. You also cannot turn off the traction control in any mode in the 100. As much fun as traction control nannies are, i'd like to be able to turn them off when i want to.

VSC turns off when locked in low in the 100. ATRAC gets more aggressive as well center locked, low and in 1.

I guess i mispoke when i said VSC when i should have said traction control. I was referring to having some sort of traction control on in 4HI that you cannot turn off (VSC), and having some sort of traction control in 4LO that you cannot turn off (ATRAC)

VSC is disengaged when the CDL is engaged. Doesn't matter if you are in low or hi, at least in my truck (2005 - year changes?) it does. ATRAC is not defeatable in the 100. I wouldn't say that you can't "actually wheel the vehicle" with ATRAC engaged. I can't think of a time I would want it disengaged. Prolonged 4 wheel burnout perhaps?

Should be the same for all years with VSC/ATRAC. The VSC needs to be able to control individual wheels and it can't do that when the center is locked.

Had a 100 series, sold and got FJC, MPGs were a little better, reliability is there, but mine was 07, never wheeled and at 90K both front wheel bearings had to be replaced, as well as one CV boot, dealer also noticed dry flaky residue by water pump, said it may be going as well. All in all not sure the quality is there compared to the 100. I found the off road capabilities of the FJ to be inferior to the 100 , not to mention the towing/recovery power in the 100 vs the FJ. With kids and suicide doors were also a PITA. I am now back in a 100 series and LOVE it...

I believe the Atrac disengages when you apply pressure to the brakes. It did on my FJC.

I went from an FJC to 4runner and now a 100. I miss the nimble feeling of the 4runner at times and the cockpit fit for me in the 4runner was perfect but the 100 is so plush and visibility for all passengers is ideal for seeing the beauty of being off road...

Also quieter with MTs on the 100 then both the vehicles mentioned prior. Used the same MT on all 3 vehicles, and the 100 must be better insulated...

The cool thing about the FJC is that it got me into this hobby and super great training from the Trail Teams program.. The rest is probably a natural progression to the 100 series..
