I'm replacing the steering column in my '87 4runner with one out of an '84, everything has been easily swapped between them until I went to put my '87 ignition cylinder into the '84 column. There appears to be a slight difference in the bar that is attached to the key release button.

All the ignition lock cylinders I can find online are shaped exactly like the one I took out of my '87 that will not fit the '84. Anyone ever run into this? Was '84 just an odd year for this part? Or am I just dumb and can't figure out how to reinstall this thing?

Thanks for any help

are the cylinders themselves different?
ignition tumbler is easily rebuilt if that's what is going on.
i also personally recommend just buying a new oe cylinder for the sake of theft prevention.
new style key, simply won't take the old keys

it just look like that one may be hung up. have you attempted to manually push it up to clear?

I think you are not aligned. I had this issue awhile back when I test fit the new part. 1984-1987 use the same part number for the ignition cylinder.

Here are a couple of better pictures. The gold bar at the top sure looks like they are different shapes to me, and that is where the lock is getting hung up when inserting. I didn't get the lock with the '84 cylinder so I can't compare them side to side.

stick something in there and push this back up. that hole won't take any cylinder like that.

Thank you everyone for your help. I was able to bend that piece up enough for the cylinder to slide into place. My problem now is that the black press button will is not pressable with the cylinder in place, its like something is getting jammed up inside. This thing is driving my nuts.

The entire reason I'm trying to use the '84 is because the black button is broken off on my original '87. Does anyone know if those can be swapped?

dude im pretty sure that button is jammed. take the cylinder back out, use lube and work it loose.
look at the two pictures and note the positional difference.

I have them in the exact position between the two, and the button works until I slip the cylinder in. I guarantee it's jammed, I just don't know how.

I'm pretty sure that gold bar got so bent that its not allowing any movement once the cylinder is installed. Which is why I'm wondering if anyone has dismantled these farther than I already have. I'm hoping someone has so that I can just move the button over to my good '87 lock.

I'm willing to try anything, but I'm not positive what part you're talking about

this piece comes out. it also looks like maybe there's a roll pin holding the pivot spring in the gold piece.
sorry im not more help, ive never had to tear one down and I don't have one actually in front of me 😂

Yes, I've pulled that piece out, it doesn't change anything whether installed or not as far as the press button is concerned.

This is what that roll pin looks like from both sides
