Can someone please explain and identifying differnce between an fj40 axel housing and a mini axel housing? I have disc brakes (my truck is a 74), but I'm unsure which axel I have.

The mini truck axle will not fit under the 40. I'm not sure if your talking about the housing or just the disk brakes. Here is a pic of a mini truck axle housing under 76. Doesn't work well. BTW it was a PO mess..... Not my doing. The diff is offset to the right on the truck axle, It is more centered on the 40 axle.

My bad, the truck axle diff looks like it's offset to the left.

A truck axle will have a noticeably smaller differential. The LC axle's differential will be identical to the one in the rear axle. Without pictures, that's the easiest way I can think of to quantify a definite difference.

Far more common that swapping the entire axle is simply swapping the knuckles, birfields, and brakes from a disk brake vehicle onto the stock axle housing. If the swap parts were taken from a mintruck, you would have solid brake rotors. A swap from a Land Cruiser would have vented rotors.

Pictures of what you have would be invaluable here, and would make it easy to point out the distinguishing characteristics.

sblesse, that's some crazy looking "fab" work. I hope you are planning to correct that before driving it. I would not want to be the car next to you when that axle let go at 65mph.

Uno, if you want to look at the differences up close, I'll be around the shop next wednesday and through saturday.

I've collected them all! 40 series, 60 series, minitruck. You're more than welcome to compare them next to one another...
