Hello all .
I have what I believe to be a fuel issue with my vehicle . Fist vehicle stats
1986 hj60 399000 km 5000km in the last 2 months.
Regular oil changes 3-3500km rotella t synthetic.
Truck recently began to shut down when shifting between first and second .
Changed fuel filter , dumped fuel tank and went to all fresh trustworthy fuel run through a water block and filter.
Engine still periodically dies in same conditions.
Starting to have periodic starvation of fuel sound ( hard rattle like metal coffee can of nickels )
No accelleration when this happens . Kay off throttle then re engage and condition disappears.

Bled injectors , ran sea foam in new filter.

Suggestions ?
Please keep the asshat comments to a minimum . I am at my wits end here .

Hmm. Happens when you let off the throttle or even when it's idling normally? Have you checked your throttle plate action with the intake hose off to see if there is play with the plate causing it to shut too much?

There is also a very small mesh screen filter inside the banjo bolt that connects your fuel line to your fuel pump. It's a pretty big mesh but could be gummed up perhaps? You need to take the bolt out and it will be easily seen if it's there.

Lastly....air? Air in your injection system can serously screw with your sanity. Check you bleeder for signs of air. I use a clear tube and put it verticle and bleed it with the pump. Makes even tiny bubbles easily seen.
I struggled with air in a motor and searched everywhere, replaced so many parts, was finally going to swap the whole pump, but it ended up being a large pocket trapped in the pump housing itself. I stopped working on that engine for 3 months cus I was so frustrated.

If you're confident your Oil Pressure is OK.. I'd disconnect the EDIC arm off the Fuel Control Lever to confirm that you're not getting a Low Oil Pressure shutdown or that the Funky Chicken isnt happening.

Also.. if you have a Factory Sedimenter fitted, I'd bypass it. Mine clogged up and caused fuel starvation.

Ok so one at a time . Topped up oil ( 1qt) loosing oil somewhere !?
Fresh fuel and crane boost , liter of veggie for lube .
Air filter is cleaned ,new On my way! Purchased and be in tomorrow.
Air intake functions correctly .
Vacuume hoses are solid and all appear to be correct and no cracks .
Desedimenter checked again and no water .
Happened again today on my way home on a hill . Front up 15*
Did 100 km after top up etc . With zero issues . Oil pressure was a little low .

Had a clogged desedimenter on my BJ 60 once . Pulled it and back flushed . Good results.
Tomorrow is a new day .

Gerg is correct, these are likely causes especially the first if you've been running ANY 'veggie'. That banjo bolt is the lowest point in the fuel system and crud will collect there. Also there is a screen on the fuel pick-up in the tank that will eventually get clogged.

I have run across this before. Pull the pickup and soak the screen in diesel, clean with toothbrush .

Greg what are your suspicions with the low oil pressure sender?
Continuity when engine is off , none when on . This is the one by the alternator .
I have AC so it was a whore to get to !

I dunno. Just trying to eliminate it from the usual suspects. I thought maybe if there was a build up of crap on it, but that would only affect it on startup. I had one that was literally so dirty the truck would shut off as it wasn't seeing pressure soon enough. The mechanical gauge built Pressure very fast. Never understood the problem till I took it off to fit a turbo oil line.

Update
Did a full lube oil change and filter . 4Litres came out !?
Pulled and cleaned oil pressure sensor . Dirty but not horrible .
Oil pressure was showing second line up as in needle horizontal . Now shows next line up as in 3/4 . Bothers me . Never been that high.

Fuel is all good. Put a can of sea foam in the fuel filter and balance in the tank.
A little cetane boost and lube .
Bled each injector.
Bled at the filter .
No more stall while underway but hard starts , stalls out and has never done that !
Going to run about 1500km this week ago will see if it is resolved .
Did a general tighten of loose fasteners on the engine today as well .

I vote low oil pressure shutdown. It may not have low oil pressure. If you are having hard starts , there maybe 2 problems going on

Don't trust your stock gauge. It's electrical voodoo. Put a mechanical one on and you will know your pressure for sure.

So does it shut off like several seconds after start up, or minute after? Makes a big difference.

I've had EDICs that were ground sensitive and would shut off if I turned in too many electrical things. Cleaned all the edic contacts and my grounds and symptoms went away. I really love and really hate electrical thingys.

Shuts off within 30 seconds of start.
560 miles today all good . Oil pressure bothering me !
First thing I do when I get home is mechanical gauge ! Have a couple on the shelf .
Also have a coolant trump gauge and pyro , water in fuel sensor and a fuel vacuume gauge. New dash layout in my future as well as fuse and switch panel for aux systems . But all that will be another thread .
