Buy a package off G&S Cruisers, you will save headache of trying to peice this thing together.

The 1HZ combo would be IMO the best choice due to the reliability and work horse nature of this engine. Also from a bolt in stand point it may well be the most basic to install.

In saying that the 24 volt accessories will make you think a bit, there are several ways to deal with this.

Do a search on some of these questions and you will come up with some good information.

if you set it up right, there are absolutely no negatives. It gives around about the same fuel consumption (way better than diesel-->gas conversion) it has better lubricity figures for the injector pump, if using biodiesel will clean and keep clean fuel lines and injectors, its cheaper than normal diesel to produce if you do it yourself, and its meant to not polute as much. I swear one day i will get round to it, when i find a non-taxed source of methanol. Or rig up a heater kit for straight oil. And cart around a 300litre tank of the stuff for camping trips. It can go under the tray on my 47 ;)
 
Im having Radd Cruisers restore my HJ60 and they have installed a low mile 1994 1HZ in her. The great thing about the HZ is that since it did come in mine trucks in Canada you can get ALL the parts for it. I've called from Seattle and the parts up in BC are no problem.

That engine is the WORK HORSE diesel in Toyotas line. I LOVE the 13BT to, but in a bigger rig like my 60 the HZ was the way to go.

I'd say go for the 13bt and order parts through G&S when you need them. Filters are easy to come by at NAPA. It sounds like you are in the same boat i was, economy over power. Well I just finished my 13bt into a 60 swap (mostly) and it has plenty of power. For economy I'm taking it to work tomorrow (82 mile one way commute) so we'll see for MPG. I'll let you know. DI/Turbo/4 cyl has much more going for it with regards to economy than an indirect injection motor, not to say they aren't great motors. I think the biggest drawback is the parts availability.

As for SVO. I've been running my 86 VW jetta turbo diesel for about 2 years now on it. I run it on an original greasel conversion and it works great for what i use it for. A commuter rig. I'd say that SVO isn't the best solution for an around town rig for short stop/go trips. In the time it takes to warm up the engine (especially in a DI motor) and run on SVO it'll be time to switch back. For those folks that say you can cold start reliably after it's warmed up, well I'm skeptical. Maybe my jetta isn't the best rig but they have a pretty good Bosch inline IP and it doesn't like cool SVO, it likes it hot. I actually have an additional glow plug heater right before the IP some days. I think many proponents of SVO are from the warmer states (ie CA) and don't struggle with the same issues northerners do. Although Charles from Greasel is in the midwest.

My solution I'm doing is my commuter car is SVO and will remain that. My wifes car (the 13bt FJ60 H55 swap) is going to run on 100% biodiesel since she only takes little 4 mi trips to town. My commuter will start/stop on 100% bd and run on svo for most of the trip.

The toyota truck / camry diesels work great on bd and svo. Don't worry about anyting. If you use BD in it swap the fuel lines with Gates 4219G hose (.65/ft) viton is too expensive for what you get. www.jgbhose.com is the cheapest.

My 1988 BJ74 with the red block 13BT shares almost all of its components with a 3B. Have had no problems going to Toyota to order things like gaskets and belts and other regular maintenance type stuff. I love my 13BT...if you can get a factory Toyota direct-injected turbo setup, why not ??? I personally wouldn't bother with a high mileage domestic 3B (that will need work) and have to mess with an aftermarket AXT turbo when low-mileage Japanese 13BTs are becoming more readily available at reasonable cost. G&S have a few coming on their next shipment, I believe.
 
I think Stone is correct. I WISH it was easier (read possible) to get 74's into the U.S..

You cannuck guys should take advantage of the import rules while you can.

I'm kind of embarrassed to put up pics of my 74, TB, because I only got her in December and haven't had the time to really wheel her yet (just a couple of light stuff so far to see what kind of flex I can get). Also, we're in an apartment until September, and I can't put in my Terrain Tamer lift and bigger tires until after we move because I wouldn't fit under the underground parking gate...and my current suspension is pretty shot.

re diesel on fj40

Im pretty sure its possible to have a diesel on your 40's, ive done it with my 69 fj40 i installed a B engine with a 5speed transmission, works great for me, plus, i save a lot of fuel consumption
