Diehard Platinum vs Cheaper Dual Battery Setup

OEM is Group 27F (reversed terminals). Very few batteries come in this size... and none I could find in an AGM.

Just do the terminal mod; you'll never regret it. More battery choices = mobetta.

For those that aren't trying to be a Baja 500 contestant  a non-sealed, externally vented battery is fine. For the rest of us choosing a sealed and internally vented battery (Odyssey, Lifeline, Deka, Sears Platinum, etc.) goes a long way to insure battery acid doesn't spew all over the PS fender and frame after a vigorous push across the rollies.

That reminds me: Someday I need to sand and paint the PS frame rails from where the battery acid leaked all over from a non-internally vented battery I tried years ago

I wanted to do the PM1; but Shaggy's sweet retorfit kit was sold out and the 2 closest Sears stores didn't have any in stock when my OEM battery was about to croak. I compromised with the DHP Group 65. The terminals are reversed; but thanks to Shaggy's thread I made some copper busbar links to connect everything. It's bigger than the stock tray / the stock battery strap can both manage so I fab a new tray and strap for it; got some good experience metal working.

Don't have a better shot of the tray / bracket. I painted it metallic blue lol with some left over rattle cans. But it fits, using it on my new Puma 12v compressor! Got it due to recommendations on mud! Worked great after airing down for beach camping in Freeman Park at Carolina Beach, NC.

It believe it is spec at 135 minutes of reserve and 930 CCA; but with a battery monitor I have, it says it has over >1000 CCA. I believe it's the same as the Odyssey PC 1750T. I also got the 20amp Odyssey Charger; but so far my Hundy has been able to keep it top off without issue.

If you wait every month they have a sale on batteries and the price can be as low as 180 (maybe more if you can stack other sears coupons) on a non PM-1 AGM. The PM-1 only has a 3 year replacement warranty and runs 279.99 or so last time I looked. That was also another reason I was happy to get the 65 in the end.

Sorry if this is a rehash or what other folks have said.

Oh and I noticed that Sears is stocking AGM under the Gold Line. Not sure if these are rebadge Odyssey units or what? The specs are a little less than the comparable DHP / Odyssey batteries and most only come with the 3 year free replacement / no extended replacement warranty.

My dad and I have used prior DHP some before they were AGMs and never had an issue with our local sears with exchanges / pro rating them. Although that was a while ago.

Just for the record, the bracket should be with the face down and not edges down. That creates a situation where it will cut into the battery. Also it is stainless steel, so no need for paint.

Again, I did that for the look of it. No cutting of the battery has occurred. And IMO, painting it made it look nicer.
