Beer might be good...

I haven't done what you are asking, but I did drive for a few days in front-wheel drive (front hubs locked, in 4H, with the rear driveshaft removed) while I was getting new u-joints put in. Mostly around town driving, but went on the freeway for 5 mins (~55mph) just to see what would happen. What I noticed was that it was loud, slow, got poor milage, and generally drove like a truck. Oh wait, it's that way in rear-wheel drive also!

I thought I remember a thread awhile ago about putting lockers on FF axles...I think it is hard on the dowel pins in the hub...maybe you need to add more...or I could be remembering incorrectly.

Entertaining thread for sure. Thanks for posting, I enjoyed this!

Howdy! I don't see how it would be a problem braking with the rear hubs in "free". It would be just like a regular front wheel drive car. How do they do it???? John

Yea, I knew that. I was just testing everybody. Got the P/N handy? I wonder if CDan can source this stuff, as I'm pretty sure the dealers don't stock it anymore. John

I'm afraid to ask, but to the few people who know what I'm talking about, would gas millage suffer from running this way? Or would it stay the same about the same.....

I imagine it would be like running with your front hubs free yet in 4wd, maybe even more as you are spinning a longer drive shaft etc.

I'm guessing that you would lose a couple of MPG. I usually get around 12 to 13 MPG driving around in the hills and during the winter, when it's snowing and I'm in 4wd, I usually get around 10 to 11 MPG. Driving with the rear hubs unlocked couldn't be harder on the fuel mileage than driving in 4wd.

Ok thanks for the info and the entertainment, I'm putting this on the top of my list of my really bad ideas. I would prolly be fine with a detroit locker as I drive like a grandma anyway on the highway. If anyone has driven in western north dakota during an ice storm they would know what kind of slick I'm talking about, it's the kind of slick were you can't walk on the road without holding on to something. Maybe with a locker in the back I wouldn't try to drive when it's like that and I'd be better off anyway.

Thanks

I never did it on my '60 (miss Muffin) But I did drive the Baddest Truck in the Valley (66 GMC w/ 3" recurve Monosprings and B & S tires )for about 4 months w/o a rear drive shaft. The truck was a might , ah , Squirrelly . :steer: Turned on a dime which was fun untill about 40 mph. Seemed to stop faster as well . Can't say that I recommend it.
