Deep Water - what did I mess up?

A few weeks ago we got a ton of rain and more than a few intersections flooded. I approached one, and proceed to go through it - not really knowing how deep it was. The water level was at mid grille, or above. I assume this as all I could see was the wake in front of me, and the water pouring over the top of my hood. I kept going and fortunately, came out the other side.

Now, a few weeks later, there is a noticable metal on metal sound coming from the alternator - or that area. Almost like bearings rolling without lubricant. It's present at idle - not just when in drive.

Did I mess something up? What do you guys do when you go through deep water?

Get a mechanic's stethoscope (NAPA for a few bucks) and listen to your alternator - chances are it is ready to shell out.

Check the belt pulley bearings with the stetoscope. I had noise on my Hilux last winter very similar to what you describe and it turned out to be one of the pulleys' bearings.
