Want to get a new decent paint job on my 80. I have grey right now but I'm trying to find out how big of a hole it's going to put in my wallet. I plan on painting it the same color again. lc grey, but land cruiser black would nice too...

Thanks,
Nick

Plan on spend upwards of $6000 depending on where you live.

6k, holy crap. I think I'll just live with the JX some a$$ keyed my car. Prolly some pissed off person that my dad knew, happened when he was driving the car.

Beo is right on on this one. Maaco will quote you way less, but you would be better off with a rattle can. BTW whats wrong with yours the way it is?
Cheers,
Sean.

It all depends on what you consider decent....Maaco will do it for 149.99 around here, but you'd have to be a fool to think it's going to turn out decent for that price. There's a lot however that a good paint shop can do to hide those if you want without having to paint the whole thing.

Or just take it off road and get some good ole Rocky Mountian Pin Striping to match for free. :flipoff2:

yeah, I have scratched it enough with the cedar trees and what not around tx, the key mark and the scratches it has on the left fender flare from my mom hitting it are getting annoying. The key mark is an eyesore too. I'm gonna go see what i can do to get it touched up or buffed out or something.

Rule of thumb for paint jobs on vehicles. Only do if needed for body damage or a total resto. Factory paint, even with fading and scratches make the vehicle worth more than a new paint job. Fear of what the new paint is hiding scares buyers, even if there is nothing to hide.
Cheers,
Sean

BEDLINER!

You could probably do it for 4k in Idaho. Our labor is cheaper. If you did the prep you could save yourself some coin. Remove the flares and repaint them. You can even rattle can them and make them look good if you do good prep. Or bedliner the flares?

As for the main paint. McGuires Diamond Cut with their polish afterwards and a wax can take out most trail scars. Be prepared for sticker shock. I think I spent 60 or 70 for the 2 stages and some pads. Probably won't help on the keying. Go to a dealer and find out who they use to detail their cars. They might point you in the right direction to get the scratches out.

I've been nice to our local Ford dealer and they will actually let me slip a car in with their used cars to get detailed. It saves about $30. I haven't ever done it to either of my 80s :(

Nyk,
DO NOT CHANGE THE COLOR OF YOUR TRUCK !!!!!
depending on what part of the coutry you are in it would be between 4-7k to just do a complete exterior paint job. there is a lot of work involved in this to do it correctly. go look at your truck and imagine taking everythhing that is not a sheet metal panel off it and then starting the prep process. you are looking at at least 30 hrs of trim removal and prep owrk before it will even get in a paint booth.
NOw the above is just to paint the exterior. if you want to change the color add all the time to completely tear down the doors and the hood and the gates and remove all of that. now your price is between 5-9k.
FWIW this is for a professional job. You can have it done with cheap paint for probably less than 2k but it is just that, cheap paint that will peel back in 2-3 years. trust me on this one that 2k will cause you more greif than some key marks in two years..

MTNRAT joked about spray painting it.

But, I've seen a car that was spray painted black- it looked hardcore. No gloss, No shine, just looked mean. I think on a big 4x4 it would look even better.

If I was low on cash and dead set on a durable paint job, that's what I'd do. Touchups are a breeze too...

Get some of that Hammerite. I think it's on sale for like $2.50/can. Should be able to do the whole truck several coats for under $20.
