^ never tire of watching that vid! Hmmm...time to go create some more solid memories!

...We're going the 12-19th of April or somewhere in that week...

For hairy_apple and others in NorCal: I'm planning on being in DV that week before Easter and part of the week before that. I don't have a real plan yet, but I'll be leaving the bay area, going down I-5, and taking the Tehachapi route into Ridgecrest.

Edit: Plan B is to go over hwy 88, then down 395.

If anyone is interested, maybe we can coordinate something.

I'll be talking atcha but probably won't make this one since it'll be too close to my son being born and all... One of these times though!

I'm interested in doing part of it with ya.. 88/395 would be cool route down. I just might not be able to stay the whole time..

Sweet. Sounds like there will be a lot of people up there. Just got this book.

Pkelly I still plan on meeting with ya. Just got the caster plates on on Saturday.

I'd be down to get together for sure. That would be fun. Right now it's looking like its just me and my wife in the 40 and my parents in a 4runner. None of my friends want to drive that far. :( Their loss.

Cool, I'm working on leaving the Bay Area on or about the morning of Thursday, April 10.
I'm not sure about the first half of the trip, but the last half will be in Saline valley, until the 19th. Yes, I am loosely affiliated with that kooky hippy "family" that congregates out there for Easter (I am not a hippy).

I wanted to begin with Butte Valley via Goler wash. Last time I was there (October), that route was in bad shape and not for stock trucks with open diff's. I don't think anyone here though would have too much trouble, especially as a group.

If Butte Valley doesn't work out, then I'll plan on exploring the Racetrack and Hidden Valley.

Of course it is possible to do all these things, but this trip I might like to just linger more.

So somewhere in the middle of the trip I'll have to re-supply at either Furnace Creek or Stovepipe Wells. This might be a good point to meet up with others.

I hope to see some of you

Georg just announced his Stockton Swap Meet for 4/12/14. Something's got to give.

John

Well, no.. actually we had to push it back one week to the 19th for out leave date... Gah.. if it's that hot we'll wait until October and go in the fall instead.

My wife couldn't get that week off work, so we figured pushing it back a week wouldn't be a big deal. Plus.. now we get to go to the swap meet! :) I was kind of bummed I was going to have to miss it.

Well shoot....Looks like we'll be passing each other on the 19th.

You still have options if it gets hot, just stick to the high country. Augreberry point is cool, you'll want to see Racetrack valley too.

Plus, you just may want to return again in October!

Joining in

I detach from my ship around the 14th of April, and have wanted to check out Death Valley and ESPECIALLY the Mojave Road since I first started reading about both. We are in an 80 series LC.

Would there be any room for another truck? It would probably be me and my six-year old daughter joining in...perhaps a friend of mine too.

Sure, but by the 14th I will be halfway into my trip (hairy_apple is going later). I'll be resupplying at Furnace Creek, then just "hanging" out the rest of the week in the remote Saline Valley (prob. via Racetrack valley).

You're welcome to tag along with me if you want to see the other side of DV, but if you're looking to take in more family-friendly sights, then base-camping at/near Furnace Creek is the better option.

Thanks! I will not be able to get on the road from San Diego until the 19th, so...

Hairy Apple, are you interested in some company? A couple of Naval Officers who grow weary of the sea, plus my daughter...

Sounds like a fun trip! i drove out there from alabama last february a week or so after finishing my frame off. Then on to sequoia yosemite and pismo. the 30 gallon tank certainly made me feel better about the fuel stops in death valley. I stayed three days camping at emigrant and on lippincott pass. Titus canyon was amazing as well as lippincott and saline valley. The washboard roads are brutal with the 40! I was concerned the entire time that something was going to break. I had been in a hurry the last week before leaving and hadnt fabbed any radiator support brackets so that was on my mind as i went over every single bump. I really wanted to visit telescope peak just because of the elevation but didnt have enough time. I had a snow storm come in while i was camping on lipincott so the drive out through lee flat was an interesting one on virgin snow and having no clue where i was at lol.

Great story, more than once I've been in situations like that where I asked, "am I going to die out here?" South pass in a white-out was one of those.

And you're the trail leader on this one :)
