Dealer option heater?

Ok, so I pulled my '65 lpb out of the garage yesterday, and spent 6 hours cleaning out the interior (it was stored for 7 years in a barn). I pulled all the interior and used my pressure washer (2600 psi) with the 0 degree tip to clean it out. I just about threw up when I was washing out the crossmember that is under the seats. I ran water through it for about an hour, and I was still getting chunks of crap out (literally).

Anyway, when I first got the truck I posted up some pics, and Pimp said that he had seen the same DIY heater side vent on another 45 lpb. You can see the vent in the first pic.

The second pic is of the heater in the passenger foot well.


Since I had everything out yesterday I figure I'd pull the heater as well. On the back of the heater is the production date of Nov 18, 1964.

So, any chance that some dealer was putting these in? Just curious considering that it is about the same age as my truck, and they have been seen on other lpbs.

1964 cobweb wonder has one. No vent to the outside though.

Ok, so any idea on the origin of these heaters?

I have seen this style two times. Hantavirus ('64) has one and this pic looks like the Jimiwag.

Tommy had the same side vent on his 45LV, it looks like its from a harware store, I dont think it was a dealer install.

heck the Jimiwag had some roof vent rubber seals for the steering shaft

All of this is 45 wagon stuff but some of it should cross over.

heck the Jimiwag had some roof vent rubber seals for the steering shaft

The antifreeze shut off valve to my heater was Rainbird (home sprinkler systems) . Also, the return line from the heater was cut off, and the hose had a rock stuck in it and clamped down on. At least I use Toyota parts... I took out the rock, and put in a motor mount bolt.

I beleive that this was a dealer option, My heater came to me taken apart, but that is what it might look like assembled.

holes/nipples might have been where a mirror was at some point.

I second Pimp's theory about the mystery carraige bolts being from a mirror. Strange tho, as their close placement wouldn't give the mirror a lot of stability.
The only other thing I have seen mounted in that location has been a jerry can holder, and that would have required even wider spacing than a mirror.


I have dismantled about 6 rigs with those aftermarket heaters over the years. None of them had the external louvre like yours.

I have a 1965 SWB and owned a 65,67,68 LWB plus worked on a customers 1966 LWB and we all had the heaters
My 1962 FJ25 (tub) had a small square factory heater half the size of that one.
