Hi All,

I tore my 4-speed T-case down for a rebuild and I've got pitting on the idler gear needle bearing races. I think I can get most other parts aftermarket, but I'm looking for either a used 4-speed transfercase, or a decent set of 4-speed transfercase gears (input, idler, high, low) that anyone would be willing to part with.

Gear Tooth Counts:
High Speed: 31
Low Speed: 40
Idler High: 27
Idler Low: 41

Preferably, somewhere I could come pick them up (I'm in Northern MD). My job requires me to drive all over NJ, DE, PA, MD, and DC so I'm happy to make the trip.

Thanks!

Rick

I've got a brand new idler for $200 shipped.

Hey Mark,

I imagine that's the idler GEAR you're referring to - Can you just swap the idler set without swapping out all the gears to run them as a matched set? Will the gears whine (worse than they do anyway) if I run them against the old high and low gears currently in my case? I always thought if one gear set was replaced, you had to replace them all with the matched gears...

That is often the case, but is not a given. If you can see a shadow of a line across the teeth of the adjoining gears, approximately half way down the face of the teeth, then they definitely should be replaced.

I can price match the other gears if you need them. I'm quite frankly at a loss to explain the current disconnect between the amount of time I spend helping with tech on this forum and the return.

Mark,

Your Tech advice on this forum is greatly appreciated ! Thank you.

Kevin

If you're interested in a newer 4-speed setup:

I have 3 4-speeds; split case variety... 2 of the earlier versions w/out extension housing and one of the later versions w/extension housing. Are you going to the CLCA swap meet this weekend? I only have one split case though... 34 mm; I have a new idler, idler bearings & idler O-rings too.

Thanks man, but I don't think I'm going to go to a whole new trans/transfer setup at this point - unfortunately I've already had my driveshafts cut and mounts welded to run the setup I had...(4-speed w/ one piece TC) otherwise I'd be all over this (or looking for a 5-speed).

I'd love to get down for a CLCA meet one of these days though - but I've got a wedding to attend this weekend. Unfortunately I'm in the "no mans land" between Keystone Cruisers and CLCA - 3+ hour drives to most meetings.

Hey Mark,

Wasn't implying I wasn't interested, just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to burn up a nice, new idler gear set on my old gears. I'll try to give you a call or perhaps send a couple pictures of my adjoining gears in a PM to get your opinion - there's definitely a wear pattern though I'm not certain of the severity.

If you've got a set of used, matched gears that are serviceable I'd absolutely consider them as well, if you don't think my existing ones will cut muster.

I'll give you a call!

PS - Your knowledge and insight are invaluable here. I picked up some parts from you in the past (via Downey) and will certainly have need of more in the future, even if the gears don't pan out.

I'm in sales of scientific instruments for a living, so I absolutely feel your pain!

Behind a V-8, new input and HOP are cheap insurance.
