Inside the housing. It seals the shaft. BTW, the gear is nylon or delrin, not vinyl.
 
should probably do the orings...they're probably due for new ones anyways;)
 
This is the gear on the back of the transfer case, correct? Not any gears in the dash end?

Appreciate the clarification. I know that there are non-metal gears inside the speedo itself, so thought possibly that was the focus.
 
Be certain you get the correct one: there are several versions for various size tires/gear ratios.
 
I bought mine from SOR. You have to know how many teeth are on the plastic gear so it would be best to remove it first. That is what I did and it has been working fine for about a year now.
 
SOR lists 16, 17, 18, 19 teeth S/D gears for 1965-1980
 
You can change teeth if you have other than stock size tires and your speedometer will be more accurate. Hint Hint. :rolleyes:
