After what seemed a VERY long search... I have true membership in the MUD! Since bringing her home in June, I've added Goodyear MTRs/wheels and a 4-plus bumper (thanks cstark!)... Since I promised to stick to an initial investment of 10K, had some $ left and felt in over my head mechanically (although I dug up plenty of info here) I had the brakes rebuilt as well as the front axles.

Rust repair will have to wait a while (at least I won the battle to keep it in the garage!)

My possible next to do may be the carb and air cleaner... I'd like to return it to stock if possible. It currently has a Holley that the PO had installed.

The truck actually runs great but I'm not thrilled with the "jerry-rigged" look.
Is there at least a way to adapt a stock air cleaner to the carb as is or just search for stock carb as well?

Welcome to MUD, neighbor! For FJ40 owners (and other Land Cruiser owners), this is the place for knowledge. "Search Forums" will be your best friend. And if you don't find what you are looking for in there, well the good folks here can/and will help greatly.

The Customary Greeting! :flipoff2:

Oh: Nice rig and a great find!

It's a good thought, but may be nearly impossible. The air cleaner assembly, smogged carb, and other associated smog equipment are rare finds these days, especially on an '82. Even trivial stuff like the rubber air intake hose is no longer obtainable.

Which is what makes this all the more fun huh!

Actually it shouldn't be all that difficult to locate the smog equipment as the '82 40 series uses most of the same parts as the FJ60 series. You're likely to get a decent deal on these parts by buying the 60 series parts. Hooking it all up is another story. Sent you a PM with some information on possible source for these parts.

Congrats from another GA guy. Nice looking truck.

I pulled the smog stuff from my 1980 FJ40 if you need anything. I also have a carb from an FJ60 (85 or 86 I think) if that might work for you. Someone on this board will know if it's compatible.

Another '82 is welcome anytime.. Looks pretty good from here. Mine loved the beach to much back in the day. I could possible help with smog pictures in needed. Mine was taken apart and put back together and runs, so most of the stuff should be right??

akingf5371 re-smogged his '82 about a year or two ago, but if you are in GA where I believe there are no smog laws, I would suggest getting a Trollhole carb, which will fit right up to a stock air cleaner, fuel lines (rubber hoses are bad IMO above your exhaust manifold), and carb linkages. Or you could run a de-smogged OEM carb, basically following the de-smog instructions in the 60 forum or by sending a core to Jim C. Unless you live in an area where you need to I wouldn't bother to re-smog it.

... and I'm admitting to a case of dumb butt! No need to worry about emissions here so the Trollhole carb (good reviews?) sounds like a good path. I'm not in an immediate need to change because the Holley set runs pretty good although I've read on the forum some bad opinions of it in general...

Thanks Matt

Hey Greg... You supplied the hard to find rear brake line I needed - Thanks! Just got it back from the shop :)

Well thanks! She's suffering from rust here and there, leaks oil (my daddy always claimed was a good thing) is a little stinky, bounces enough to pop a hemorrhoid, wanders somewhat, the 3 women in my household probably see it as an eyesore......... AND I ABSOFRICKINGLUTELY LOVE IT!!!

The troll hole carbs here have the best reviews out of pretty much anything else on here no matter the product. From what I read the guy is a good guy that sells a good product only thing that stinks is sometimes can take a month or two but that is the name of the game with these hard to find parts from other countries.
Im in the same boat as you with the weber carb I have. It came on the 40 and works just ok but from what I have read the troll hole runs better than anything else. So I think thats on my list as well, but then I am missing all the stock air stuff.

Good looking 40, your wait paid off. I would apply a spray can of some rust inhibitor or converter on the worst areas to keep it from spreading and just drive it as is until you know what to do next. Ive learned that 40s can sometimes tell you what they need done more than what you can figure out needs to be done next. (my 40 decided while driving to get the floor pan welded in was a good time to let a rear wheel cylinder go)

my girlfriend sees my 40 as a waste as well, but she doesn't realize how great they are, and that im on mud reading about them while she watches her boring girly shows.

X2 on the troll hole carb. Put mine on a few months ago and really does bring a smile to my face.
