I prefer CM Columbus McKinnon

There are different WL limits. I'm sure any of the winch mfg shackles are fine too.

I've always wondered the same thing and I've never been able to get a straight answer.

Rigging supply companies carry the best, strongest shackles due to the "overhead" lifting requirements. Crosby forged shackles are highly regarded and have always served me well.

Here's just one of the many sites that offer them. Several Mud venders offer them as well.

Good luck.

Crosby Catalog - Shackles

Crosby is for sure the number one no questions asked.

I would stay away from the CM... The company I work for won't even allow them on the job site due to quality control issues with there products.

What about Warn D-rings?

Have you ever seen a D ring fail? If so, what were the circumstances?

All of mine are Hecho in China and have not missed a beat..

It used to be that Fastenal had a very good price on Hecho in USA shackles, I believe they were Crosbys. I also have a few from Columbus/Mckennon which are also very good. Avoid unrated shackles-they are out there often in stainless, or at Tractor supply. Without a rating, you have no idea what you are getting. The rating will be cast into the body of the shackle and the better shackles will have lot numbers forged into the pin.

Also have e few Hecho in Chin shackles-also fine, those are loaners. They are rated a bit lower than the USA ones 4 3/4 ton vs 6 ton in the same size shackle.

I've never seen a shackle fail of any type, and I worked as a rigger on a crane when I was in college. All of our shackles were Crosby or CM.

Best advice I can give, is to get 2 good ones, and spray paint them a unique ugly color. That way you can identify at a glance which are yours and they tend to find their way back to you.

I was looking at those as well. Smittybilt makes some good stuff.

Pretty sure those Smittybuilt ones are the usual Chinese POS shackles. If you use them, at least make sure they are rated. This is a good place to support a quality US manufacturer, so stick with CM or Crosby.

Good to know. I'm thinking Crosby then.

My Warn ones say WLL 4-3/4T and I'm assuming that's the rating?

All cranes/equipment on sites I've worked on - only rig with Crosby or Van Beest shackles. Any local rigging supplier will only sell either of these two. And cheaper too.

If it has a green 3/4" pin, its a Van Beest from Holland. Red - Crosby from USA.

Edit: Anything else is 2nd rate.....
