Just back from a trip to the north woods maine and noticed I had a torn cv boot. I know it's easier to just replace the whole assembly than to replace the boot and plan on doing so.

I'm still learning this truck and have never done a IFS front half shaft before. Anyone have a good write up or video for this? It can't be too hard and I'm sure I could figure it out if need be.... Just not sure if I need anything special (tools or hardware wise)

Getting a napa remaned unit for 60 bucks..... Can't beat that but don't want to have it apart and find out I need three more things and they are closed.

Just read more and ill get the Toyota one. Still looking for the write up.

This is an excuse for me to get a spare for the trail also.

I notice a bit of grease sprayed out so my guess is the cv may be less than perfect now anyways

I've read multiple places that say just replace the whole assembly

Any update On this? curious for those that have done their own, how tough did you find it? Local Mechanic Saïd 90 dollars aside if i supplied boot kit

I just rebooted the driver side CV; fairly easy job but very messy. Unfortunately the passenger side inner race on the inboard shaft was gouged so I'm waiting for a new unit from Toyota.

Replacing a whole new unit is definitely easier than rebooting since you don't have to tear down, clean, regrease, and reboot. Just take old out and slide new in.

For those of you re-installing, I'll repost this as it makes such easy work of getting the cv seated back into the diff. image-1323165032.webp image-1998992841.webp

I've rotated it 9 ways to Saturday and fought it before trying this. But I'll make a mental note of this next time. My little prybar thing took no time at all.

Does it work both ways? If you paint mark the housing can you clock it to 'tdc' and get it to release easy as well?

Ok you two need a room.

CV's can seem daunting your first time around abut after that you're a pro. Short side is harder to break loose and/or reseat than the longer side is. You don't have to undo the LCA just the upper. Just got to harbor freight and buy the $10 knuckle puller.

Not sure If I ever followed up. I got the remanned napa piece, had it installed in an hr, 6k miles later, offroad and on and its working fine. I was going to keep the old one and reboot it but decided to just bring it back for a core charge refund.

No complaints here and a very easy job

I think if your rig is stock you'll be fine. My aftermarket CV failed after I lifted the truck and started off roading it. The PO had installed it 30k miles prior to fail.

I replaced both sides with new Toyota units and plan to refurb the one Toyota unit for a spare since it worked fine after 164k.
