Has anyone ever cut & turned a rear axle on a 93+ 80 series? Just wondering if there is anything tricky I've done fronts before etc. I assume it's the same sort of setup out back just looking for possible pointers.

What? You don't cut the ends off, you just turn it to suit the pinion angle to your application. Same with all rear axles.

I think he wants to cut the ends off and rotate the e-brake bell cranks up out of the way? I think I would consider building some weld on protection before I'd try that. Not sure if the spindles in the rear have the same sleeve inside the housing that the fronts do for the balls? Might make for a tricky realignment after the fact? I have an 80 series axle in my rock crawler and the bell cranks are all beat to s***. I just stopped using them.

Yep exactly the problem I want to solve, that is what I'm wondering is how it is fit up, I have to clean the housing better and if there is a sleeve in there. Maybe I'll dial the housing, mill it out true and put a slug in it for allignment weld it up and slide hammer the slug back out!

I recently narrowed a rear 80 axle. I cut the housing 4.5 from the backing plate flange and the inserted a sleeve and welded back up after removing a section. When the end was cut off I could see that there was a sleeve of some sort inside the axle extending torwards the spindle. I did not cut the housing at the end, so I don't know what it looks like at that spot.

Thank you, I'll have to clean the housing out a bit more and have a look to see how long the sleeve is, the front ones are short wonder if the rears are the same

Don't hold me to it but the sleeve I inserted inside the housing torward the spindle measured 3.75 inches about. Knowing I cut the housing at 4.5 inches from the backing plate flange would leave me to beleve the spindle section has about a .75 inch insert into the housing. I am recalling this from memory, so pleas don't hold me to exact numbers here. Just wanted to share what I could roughly recall.
