Thought that this would be interesting to share:

Just weighed my rig (Thanx Chris aka MrQtipps) after having done all my chopping up of the truck thus far (roof, c-pillar back), loaded w/ internal cage, bumpers and the rear seats in, spare 40" tire, tools...she weighs

wait for it...

4200lbs +/- 100 lbs
2000 in the rear
2200 in the front

If I go tube doors minus another 200lbs and with a little more effort and cutting I can probably get into the high 3000 range. Compared to the weight of the truck when it was whole (about 6100lbs loaded) the new numbers are not too shabby IMO.

I would hesitate with that final weight.

The hanging hydraulic scale works pretty well to determine sprung weight but over all weight I would put it on a public scale.

I would guess you would be about 1,000 off.

Just a guess

put it on a public scale and report back

lol, I knew my assumption was too good to be true. lol. To the public scales!

stock 80 is 4700 lbs

if your rig weighs less than 5000lbs now as it sits i would be impressed

stock jeep tj weighs 3700lbs

the tricks to making an 80 a hardcore contender (besides big tires) are all about weight management

I have not had a chance to scale the truck yet, but yes it is the trick to making it hardcore. collectively though it is hard to reduce weight, especially in the front. Easiest few pounds you can shave would be the hood and tube doors (with doors at about 60lbs each and the hood at 50 that would help). Tubing the rear of the truck C-pillar back would get you into the 3000 range (just my rear bumper is about 150lbs.

The next step really needs to be some sort of crawlbox and Marks is looking to be the only option STILL. If there was only a way to adapt an atlas, anything from marlin/inchworm to the 80...I'd have no problem moving the gas tank and cutting wherever need be to get that to happen (ideas and recommendations welcome)...

You could always go chevy engine, 700R4, toybox from marlin to a split case.

But if you want to keep it all toyota marks seems to be the only option.

I was 4300# with hardtop and doors on my 45 project. Just under 4000 with bikini top.
The Marks Crawl Box even with its issues is still the easiest way to go. A few mods to it made it the single best mod for the 45. Nothing like having super low gears.
Chop the rear of the 80, loose the doors and liftgate, maybe cut the roof off, and get some gears and the 80 becomes a lot of fun in the hard stuff.

Combine these and you have my rough plan as soon as I get another tow rig...

problem is that unless u loose the heavy 80 cab like Gary did u will not get close to 4000lbs UNLESS you totally gut the 80. (especially if you add bumpers and other armour, winch etc.)

With regards to gutting the 80.
I will wager that if you do not add bumpers (dont need em) and use simple tube weld on sliders you can get the 80 close to 4300lbs with the following:

...Ill bet the doors must be 80lbs each and the the tailgate is massive-drop em
...the seats in 80 are heavy too. loose the 3rd row and replace 1st and 2nd row with cheap/light race seats
...no spare

The tailgate on the Black Raven and Drexx's Ultimate 80 should go. That is one heavy piece. Get a tailgate net designed for a midsize truck or do some diagonal prerunner-style bed braces.

Why? start with a different platform.

I would guess my 40 weighs around 4K, and it is bare bones. I would have a very hard time seeing an 80 with any body chassis interior left in it with a cage and big tires hitting that mark.

I was 3250 lb in this pic.

And 3300 lb in this one.

I add bead locks and 3 hydro pumps hydro steering

SO! finally got the 80 onto an official public scale and I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed b/c with all that cutting I didn't loose much of anything, lol. Fully loaded (rear seats, cooler, spares, full stomach) with me in the truck she's at

6,290lbs
In retrospect I was rather optimistic. When I sat down and thought about it for a sec and realized that my 5 tires alone weigh 650lbs and I have about 30feet of 2" .120 wall DOM throughout the truck. Oh well I guess it's time to tube the back end, ditch the tailgate, and tube the doors. :flipoff2:
