howdy~! does anybody know if you can take say a 180 t-stat and somehow make it a 170 by drilling a hole in it or somehow altering it:hhmm: is it possible?

well i know that for the 3fe there are two temp tstats available: 82* or 88*

so maybe you can find out if you can get the same for your application

I don't think so, the operation temp is dependent entirely on the spring rate of the metal.

You might try "building" one, by swapping in a coil from a different vehicle that operates at 170*.

Why do you need one to open up that low?

thanks

there are 160 and 180 but was trying to same some$$ has anybody tried to alter there t-stat?

Running without a T stat will never let the engine get up to operating temp... Drilling holes in it (small IE 1/8 inch or smaller) will just allow some to bypass until the main valve opens at 180 etc.... What is going on that you think you need a 170? If it's a 22RE and you are getting a temp gauge overshoot on start up read here:

Toyota 4Runner and Pickup: Cheap Tricks

just find a t-stat for the temp you want that has the correct diameter flange. When I had cooling issues pulling my trailer, i found a 160 degree thermostat that had a wider flange than I needed (Ford, I think), so I just trimmed the edge down with my dremel

my truck is running a little hot for here in the spring in Az.. and when it gets hotter here i want it to have lower starting temp point, so I am trying to get it to run a little cooler. good ideas I'll try something any other ideas?

Is it running hot on the highway, or at idle, or both?
Yeah, I'm suspecting the fan clutch silicon oil is dying, that is loosing it's viscosity, or it could even be leaking out. That will cause overheat problems when going slow or at idle. The FAQ has a thread on changing it. I just put an excess of 10k silicon oil in mine and it is acting locked up. I'll have to remove a bit and see how it goes.

If you haven't done it, flush the radiator and engine block.

Also check the radiator for fin rot or folded over fins.

just had the fan goo changed...... running hot on highway had rad rebuilt last month....

Also corroded away water pump blades, and blocked engine core passages are other possibilities. Something is causing it to not get enough coolant circulation. Either the pump isn't working right, or there is a blockage in the coolant flow.

In stock form the truck should easily keep it's self cool doing 65MPH on the highway on a 100 degree day while carrying a maximum load.

will check the belt
new hoses
water pump looked good when I did the t-chain
