I just finished making a set of sliders for my HDJ81. Took inspiration from some of the commonly available options (you know who they are), then tweaked them to suit what I wanted. The outer tubes are turned up a bit for clearance, but are still very usable for a step. I had access to some shiny aluminum checker plate, so I put that in the step area so once my daugher is big enough to climb into the rig on her own there isn't a place for her foot to slip through. :crybaby:

The inspiration for this being my first mod was mangling one of the stock aluminum running boards, and deciding I best get some armour there before mashing a rocker panel. Mission accomplished. :grinpimp: The :princess: is pretty happy to have steps back on the truck for getting in and out too.

Enjoy some pics. If anyone in the southern BC area wants a set for their 80 or 81, I could be persuaded into building a couple more sets. Custom options available too. But this isn't the classifieds, so PM me.

Cheers, Jason

Cool. I wish I can have somebody fab one for my hdj81.

Im trying to see a difference but I cant see any difference between the HDJ or the FJ. So shouldn't you be able to use anyone's sliders?

Great fab work, now spend the money for the sliders on something else you can't build:D

Thanks guys. I decided when I bought the truck that anything that I can build, I will build instead of buying.

I think the HDJ and the FJ are pretty well the same, I just don't have to deal with the big cats on the right side. I have a small muffler there, which will be disappearing anyways, so I just had to go around the pipe.

I'm still undecided what is next. Either a roof basket or a rear bumper. I scuffed up the rear bumper on the weekend on a rock though , so the decision might be getting clearer...

nice work jason...looks good. im guessing those are a weld on? whatcha got planned for a rear bumper? rear x-member removed or intact? id be down for one of those if youre looking to fab up 2 at the same time... :D

That step plate is a nice touch. Looks good!

They are bolt on. I made up some U-brackets that wrap the frame from below, and have a couple 4" bolts at the top. As for a rear bumper, I think I'll leave the rear x-member, and make up some skookum ends. Still in the early planning stage on that one. I'll keep you in mind when I get there :hmm:

very nice.... I like the truck too, I have the same one!

Hey Cruisin... looking good.

Before you pull the trigger on the rear (or front) bumper, post up. There are a few of us on the Big Island who are looking at bumper options....

Yeah you are a bc fella. Only folks from bc use the word skookum. Kinda like those freakjobs in Sask that call hoodies bunny hugs.

Nice work. Might you be interested in making up a set and shipping them to Calgary? Could you PM me with your anticipated costs?

If you have an hdj, how would you confirm if you manage to avoid the cats?

Since I have a bit of interest in a set for a gas powered 80, can anyone tell me what differences there are in the frame from a HDJ to a FZJ? Especially the contour of the frame, and where stuff is mounted. Or if someone in the Chilliwack/Abbotsford area has a 80 (or LX450) and wouldn't mind me poking around under it with a measuring tape and camera for a few minutes...

Thanks,
Jason

if you're ever in abby near clearbrook, come by my work..@ London Drugs. you'll usually see my 80 in between there and price smart. i wont mind if you poke around under there...i can see it from my work upstairs. pm me when you're wanting to check 'er out. i've already got sliders so it will give you an idea of mounting. my cats & cut n turned though, so they lay flat instead of oem upright.

and iirc, the frames are pretty identical maybe save for a few differences in mounting points, but all the susp/drivetrain bolt on areas are the same...perhaps some specifics are probably reversed for RHD. body mounts should be identical. since there is no cats on the 81's..theres just that much more room....

Karl.... i might jump on your bandwagon as well with these....

cool, been wanting to know myself. ssssoo, a slee, manafre, or whatever prefabbed slider will do the hdj81's then? straight bolt on?

btw, if one was to plan on a 3" exhaust, would it still be okay to fab it up, after the sliders have been installed? or should the exhaust be put in first, then fab around it..curious... no cat, and it'd follow a similar path anyway, no?

great job Jason! pm sent.

if you get a chance, could you share some shots underneath for the mounting points and clearance from the exhaust? only if you can...:)

Pretty sweet looking sliders!

Skookum and bunny hugs... Canadians!:D
