THought I'd post here in the 45 section...

My 79 troopy has an H motor that is pretty tired. I recently installed a Dana 60 and Dana 70 axle set with 37 inch tires that I had from a past FJ60.

Should I go 6BT or 4BT??? I would like 6BT, but will a 4BT give me enough power with the new running gear? Is the 6BT a problematic swap into a 4X series cowl?

I have not had driveshafts made yet because I am wondering if the H with 4speed will even turn the big tires, especially since I live in Colorado with lots of mountain and high altitude driving. So I am at a point where I need to make a decision on powerplant.

Thanks!!!!

I have seen a FJ45 with a 5.9L 6 cyl diesel. Guy had everything tucked under the hood too. But I would say your biggest problem will be the rad and cooling the beast.

Really!! Any pics??

Did the guy with the 5.9L fit the radiator in the front?? Or did he relocate. I don't want to relocate it.

And for all those interested, it is an 'H' motor that cranks right up and idles smoothly. It is not '2H' or '12H'.

i have almost the identical rig and was thinking about a cumins swap as well. pretty sure i will end up with the 4bt just cause it fits so nicely. plenty of power for me.

i know the 5.9 swaps are tough because of space limitations. does'nt bob R have a 6bt in the red 45 that was at TTC a few years ago?

Sorry no pics, guy just flagged me down one day when he saw my truck. The 5.9L did have the rad up front, but I believe he had to modify the firewall. I think the FJ45 from the TTC had a detroit diesel in it.

was a 6.5 Chebby...which is a Detroit :D

another factor too is weight, for what its worth... 6BT is about 1200 lbs, the 4BT is about 800, same as a 2F... I like the 6's more personally, but especially if off roaded I think the 4BT is better cause of the weight IMO..

Thanks for the replies. :)

Actually, the volvos are going under a lpb. ;)

The troopy is already SOA on a 65" D60HD front and 63" D70FF rear.

This rig is big and needs all the power, so I have chosen 6BT and hope to start the swap next week.
