I have no idea, but it's going to be impossible to know what was causing that noise unless the truck makes it again.

Are you running stock injectors? This might be your chance to upgrade to something more interesting :smokin:

I don't need more interesting at this point. More MPG would be nice but I don't want more power and they all advertise "more power, better MPG". I will try just a cleaning first.

The problems just keep rolling in on this trip. Everything was going good when I left for home this morning. I decided to drive down to valley of the gods and monument valley area for some scenic views. After finishing valley of the gods road I noticed my voltage gauge was pegged at 18V. Pulled over and noticed the ground wire coming from my voltage regulator had broken off the alternator. Both batteries were toast. PS was boiled over leaking water. DS was only puffy. Only option I had was to disconnect alternator and limp into Farmington, still a good hour away, to find a parts store. Surprising my solar kept my toasted batteries at 12.9V the whole way.
After fixing ground wire, buying two new batteries and replacing voltage regulator I was ready to roll except my low beams didn't work. I had them on when I had the voltage spike so I'm sure I fried something. High beams still work and fuses are good. I also have the airbag light on the dash lit up. I was able to use my fog lights with my hazards to limp into Bloomfield to a hotel. Now to read up on the electrical repair manual.
Tomorrow I will run as far as I can during daylight and might use my fogs to get me home if I'm close. No time to figure anymore problems on the road.
A few photos before ball kicker came calling again.

Holy crap that sucks. I can honesty say I've never had any of my charging systems OVERCHARGE. Yikes! Easily could have been worse. Ever seen a battery explode?

I was going to wait to post when I got home but I stopped to finally eat today. Wonderful McDonalds in Fort Stockton.
About 5 miles out of Pecos, TX the fuel filter cracked! I dumped a half tank of diesel driving into Pecos to get to a truck stop. I have never seen this before. Neither did the handful of Cummins drivers I asked at the truck stop. I had a spare so it was a quick fix but damn can this vacation/journey get any worse. 5 hours from home at the moment.

Sheesh, might be time to cut your loses and just pitch a tent in your backyard :flipoff2:

Only on tablet batteries here at work. They ooze more than explode.

When looking for a replacement fuel filter that eliminates the WIF sensor watch how you measure it. I measured from bottom of filter housing to top of lift pump. Found one that would just fit. Forgot to account for the length of the nipple that the filter screws on to! Couldn't find a way to tip it in place. Waste of a filter. No, I don't remember the p/n. Just my learning experience so it doesn't become yours.

I have plenty of room for a taller filter if needed. I doubt I'll switch to the no drain filter. A friend just spend $3,400 on his 04 due to bad fuel. Although his sensor didn't work which didn't help. I just cut the wires since I don't have it working either. I do drain a bit out between oil changes. I think once a week is proper protocol from what I read.

The 04 CR engine is much more sensitive to bad fuel as well. I'll bet you could go a month easy between drains depending on the quality of your fuel. I put just shy of 10k kms on my Isuzu and had no water at all collect in my racor fuel water separator.

Well I have a 91.5 cummins with a VE pump so we don't share the same filter but...

For your P Pump
Part # for Fuel Filter without drain? "Wix 33391"

I wouldn't worry about draining the filter every week or even every other week. Probably once a month or every oil change.

I run a wix with a twist drain on mine but different part number from yours.

This thread got me to looking again. Off of Cumminsforum I found Donaldson BF7528 or Wix 33391. Same size as stock filter but w/o the bottom screw in for the WIF sensor. Does have a drain plug tho. Eliminates sensor, which will crack apart when you try to remove it when it's 20 below 0. Not that you get many days like that in TX.

Honestly if you get a batch of bad fuel, the filter probably won't stop it anyway...

A little moisture or a little bit of water in the fuel no problem.

I was working for a mine and we got several tankers of fuel a day, one time I filled up a tank with fuel and got probably 300 gallons of water, only noticed because there was a foot of gray in the sight straw. A filter won't stop that.

Anyway, get rid of the WIF sensor drain style and run the normal twist drain filter and you'll be better off. Those other ones have a propensity to leak anyway.

You're supposed to drain the fuel filter once every month? I drained mine once since the motor was installed (3 years ago) and that's because I let fuel gel up.

Unless you make your own fuel, why would you need to drain the filter so often?

What kind of mpg's are you getting? Any timing advance? Injector power will not improve unless your old ones were that bad... but you would know somethings up.

Honestly I don't drain mine even once a month but... Condensation in your tank or the stations.

I might drain my 6.4 once every 6 weeks if I remember but thats a little more critical.

The cummins I don't drain. But for Mr.Cimmaron's peace of mind... If he want to drain it I'd suggest once a month, thats far easier than once a week.

I'd probably suggest every oil change though really. But I don't want to push too hard too fast.

It doesn't take but 5 seconds to drain out a a few ounces into a cup. If it looks and smells like diesel I toss it and go about my day.

On the trip I got between 16.5 to 20. I haven't touched the timing. It should probably be checked.

Put some timing in that motor. It will run better and increase mileage. Just don't get too carried away

I finally had a bit of time this week to dig back in the truck and fix some things.
-Replaced the 4wd indicator switch on the split case with the switch from my spare 80. The 60 series switch has an integrated pigtail, which fell off, and the 80 does not. The switches were the same length (failed to take photo) so it should work. I won't know till I install the batteries back in. Now I have a connector harness just like a factory 80 again.

-Replaced coolant temp sensor connector which I broke off working on the truck in Moab. I thought it was a Cummins connector but realized it was the factory Toyota so I used the spare from the parts rig. Back in business on this.

-Next up was my leaking primer plunger. It only leaked when priming the pump after fuel filter change but still annoying. The pump is only sold as a whole with no individual parts from Cummins. I replaced the two O rings with ones I had in my Harbor Freight kit. No more leaks now. For the Cummins guys be careful unscrewing the plunger. It is plastic and spring loaded.
