sorry fellas..... I haven't been following this thread much but you know I am in for some action....... can be up there earlier on the Friday of the Cullowhee run if we can arrange a meeting time with the forest service.

Heather a question for you; what do we do about the trails that don't fall on the USFS maps of the area (since much of the trails system doesn't) I have seen their maps and they are very limeted in scope. Do we need to map the trails we want to mantain?

but yeah I am in

I can help w/ mapping. I've got a GPS now w/ topo sofware, and I fully intend on mapping everything we drive when we go for the Feb. run. B/t that, the paper maps I have, and Google Earth we can give them a pretty good idea of what/where we're talking about.

Herein lies my concern. We can't go to the USFS and tell them we want to help maintain trails that aren't theirs. We need to know which ones fall under their control, and which don't. Then we need to know who controls the others and talk to them at the same time.

I will try to do my part here in the next month....plan on going up and cutting out some fallen trees to open new trails. I figure i can pick up a bag or two of trash while up there also.

If someone has a trailer I can bring the Ranger to help get to the tough spots.

HAHA!! I actually started to suggest just that when I saw it in the For Sale section, but I had no idea when we'd be up there for maint. or if you'd still have it or not.

Imdebating whether or not to keep it- It is a blast- and it saves all my other rigs from trail damage.

The problem is that I havent gotten to ride it in some of the cool places around here. It is made for heavy trail duty- I took it to Wayehutta OHV- and the atv guys freaked out seeing that thing on the trail...next time they will go the right way on the one way trails:rolleyes:
I may have a trailer I can use to get it up there if I dont sell it. I probably should just take it Cullowhee with you guys , Iwasnt sure how you would react to a UTV tagging along. Maybe I could put a Toyota emblem on it?

smkymntn;3019391 I probably should just take it Cullowhee with you guys said:
uber quiet and i wouldnt mind , BUT all vehicles up there on the trails have to be licsensed and tagged, so most atv use in the area is dual sport bikes. There is the brushy mountain area for atv's though.

on the subject of maintenance though. I think we should heed heathers advice and form a great plan of action and know what we want before jumpin the gun and calling folks unprepared and ununited. Also, with this planning we have a bit of time and what about the idea of getting to know the land and the people in the right places and plan a monthly trip(perhaps meeting too) in the warmer months for a major effort depending on the results of communication? I could bring the taco instead, and perhaps others w/ trucks to load/haul tools and trash. I could see us splitting into two groups and starting at opposite ends and meeting in the middle.

Heather, Karl and myself are working on putting a plan of action together. I hope to spend some time this weekend studying and will report back asap.

Nice! Steve, I'm probly gonna be home this wkend to do my spacers, trimming, oil change, strap down my new batt. and stuff. I didn't get anything done last wkend due to studying for my 2 exams I had yesterday. Gimme a call if you'd like to discuss any of it. Otherwise, I might just stop by and see the new Papa Smurf if I get a chance. There's a chance of a group going to the gulches tomorrow if you're interested to try out Papa locally PRIOR to cullowhee.

I'll be around for part of the weekend - and I might be game for a quick trip to Gulches - call me.

I didn't think you could take a vehicle up there? I used to ride my motorcycle there and pay my $5. But they said they would ticket any vehicles? I had a friend find out the hard way when we were freshman and got stuck up there one night. Had to hike out by moonlight. :o

that really sucks- I would not have wanted to hike out of there. We made it through all but the toughest trails- I didnt do those because I had the kids with me.
