Cruising speed for my BJ74

I drive it 2 to 3 times a week to work and my round trip is 50 miles. I only have about 180,000 on the meter so I figured she is just about broken in.

Yer gonna mess things up going 50 miles on a kilometer speedometer......

It'll bind-up.....

Yes... I have heard of folks opening up the dash just to put little pieces of tape to make 35, 45, 55 and 70 mph on their KPH only speedo's

My speedometer is in knots. :)
As long as I am able to outpace a fully laden log truck, I'm content.

In my part of Florida it is not a log truck but more likely a dump truck dripping some unknow fluid seeping from the bottom of the load they are carrying that you cannot see...

Hello,

As @beno pointed out, the 3B and its derivatives were not designed with American highways in mind.

There are a couple things to consider after cruising with a 13B-T powered Cruiser. I posted this scan from the user's manual some time ago, but I think it is good to post it again.

This procedure applies for both the 13B-T and the 2L-T engines. I have my suspicions that failure to observe this might be a cause for the head problem in the LJ78 Series, but that is another story.

Hope this helps.

Idle-down allows the turbo to cool off while oil is still flowing. Hot shutdown will coke the turbo bearings.

Premise #1... I don't know squat about the internal workings of a Toyota turbo.
.... But I thought the CT26 also had supplemental water cooling that continued to cool after engine shutdown.

Thanks for the details... The time it takes me to get home from the highway and the number of times I need to actually stop allows me to be well within tollerance but that is good information to know.

Hello Bob,

I am glad you found it useful.

Regarding the snorkel, it is great if you live/drive in dusty places. Not sure about the power but it prevents excess dust from getting into the filter and the engine. Just my opinion.

I opened up the exhaust and therefore provided an oppourtunity to utilize an increased airflow which the snorkel provides. By itself, I agree that it would not change anything. I got the snorkel for two reasons; to prevent water getting sucked into the turbo and block and becuase I like how it looks.

The snorkel increases the air flow for sure, and yes it does run smoother as I am sure I increased the horse power some.

I was told that snorkels are for dusty conditions, not increased airflow and HP. I think I read somewhere on this form that Toyota doesn't even warranty against water damage on new cruisers with factory Toyota snorkels. Unless your turbo runs extremely hot to evaporate water, I wouldn't bet on the snorkel alone protecting the turbo from water damage. :)

My Snorkel is Unique ....... True story.

I was sitting in a Waffle House recently and at an adjoining table an elderly gentleman and the young waitress were discussing my Ute. (neither realized I was the owner) She pointed at the snorkel and ask the elderly gentleman "what is that?" and without hesitating he told her that the devise enabled the driver to see underwater. (aka periscope).

Tech content:
While some snorkels prevent the intake of dust and water, mine functions at a much higher level. :)

I just completed a 2500 mile roadtrip with a 1990 HZJ73 on 31" snow tires and kept my speed between 70 and 75 MPH on the GPS !

Average fuel consumption was 22 mpg and I am sure that if I did 65 mph it would go above 25 mpg.

I think we always have to look at the actual speed on the gps because in the past 25 years I did not had any LC speedo that was correct ;-)

I suppose you could put a small camera in the mouth of the snorkel and connect it to a veiwing screen inside the truck
