Hi there Welby, go and have a look on the S.A Toyota website www.toyota.co.za they there have a great comparison between the standard 70 series that we get here and the new anniversary models.
We had a very similar thing last year here with the Toyota hilux pick-up for their 40 year anniversary

Some major differences alright between models, can't figure out the engine choices though, the 200 series is essentially the same engines as the 79 series less 1 turbo and perhaps some electronic trickery to push out a bit more power, they certainly drive different from the 79 series. So if its a fuel issue what do they do different with the 200 series??

I am not a 100% sure but I think they added more turbos to the 200 and Parado but as you sow the 76 diesel has no turbos witch you are lucky to have (even the anaversery models), we can add a turbo but then you void your warranty with toyota and it can only be aftermarket.Like I mentioned before I think it has something to do with the Diesel quality up in Africa...

I am also 100% with you on the BFG's you put on your cruiser, I have the same on mine. What milage did you get on your first set. I am on about 36000 km and they still look ok!!

I did 30,000ks on the 1st set, they were the old pattern not the KM2s. They had 9mm left on them and with that amount of tread left the tire guys are happy to trade, as they can still sell them. We then get a fresh tire for maximum grip in the slushy stuff. The Old BFGS were a really good tire, never had 1 slip on the tarmac in the wet or anything. You get the odd moment when you are pushing it along and into a corner ( In the rain of course) and the corner tightens ..... you think " this could be nasty" but the BFGs just hang on. I find the new KM2s are a bit easier to push, less noise on the tarmac, and the ability to get a second grip - just magic. You know those moments when you are on a hill and its a bit damp and the tires a throwing a bit of muck around as you drive up it, and next thing theres a fair bit of slippage going on, so the foot goes down a bit, wheels turn faster, the tread clears, you then ease of on the gas - magic those big BFGs get a second grip truck surges forward, and I can use all that wonderful torque the V8s have ( Max at 1200rpm) to finish the hill off. I have never had a tire that can do that unless its a Simex Centipede or similar and they are no near as good as the BFG on the road.

I have had my BF's on from day one and they have been a pleasure , specially up the mountains and threw water crossings.
What cruiser do you have...?

Wow awesome look, did you do the back conversion yourself. It is the firs time I see one like that. What motor is inside?

No Not me mate, far to tricky for me - no engineering skills at all. However I did know what I wanted. Tipper unit electric/hydraulic a off the shelf item here in NZ. Deck made by engineering firm in Christchurch, there are a lot of cab / chassis Utes here so professionally built items are common. This is their standard deck for a Landcruiser with some modifications for the tipper unit, and I doubled the height of the sides, for a greater carrying capacity.

Engine is the 1VD-FTV ( Turbo Inter-cooled Diesel V8)

Truck is factory standard with the high county pack option here in NZ = front / rear electric lockers.

This is the LX model so is bit more refined than the "workmate" - certainly drives better with the wider wheels.
Bars are all Toyota factory accessories - designed to take the 4500kg super winch. The only thing I have changed are the standard tires to 285/75 / 16s

And I just love driving it. Its not used during the week as I have a work vehicle, but come the weekend I just have to find an excuse to use it.

Thanks for the post

But that bumper looks like TJM bumper and siden bars ( sliders .. ) I don't think Toyota make 'em .. anycase lovely Cruiser .. ( 76 to me .. with same engine and extras )

Bars are definatley Toyota, I ordered them as an original accessory, when I bought the truck, but fair to say they may be made by someone else for Toyota.

Here and Australia they are marketed as Landcruiser 70s

interesting info Welby ... they have Toyota logo .? ( not intended to doubt about what you are saying )

No Toyota Logo, bars were on order from the Toyota accessories list for the truck when it was ordered, although they did arrive after the truck. I did hear that the bars were made in Australia by a local engineering firm to Toyota specification. They were making a huge number for the Australian Market, several hundred per month, NZs quota for the same bar was 2 a month.

If you follow this URL it will take you to the current equivalent, the new models now have air bags, mine does not
Toyota LandCruiser 70 Accessories

Cheers

Yes we are lucky we are relatively close to Oz, so we get most of the options that they do, with some minor changes. The NZ market is very small and If we were not as close as we are I doubt we would get the new models at all, probably be the same as you guys, get the new shape with the old engine. However it appears Mr Toyota was keen to lower the emission levels on the new model in NZ hence the V8. The New engine meets euro 4 standard.

Cheers
