Hello boys and girls. I have recieved clearance from the tower to start planning this trip. My first hurdle is to fill out the application and decide what trails to run. I am very accustomed to East Coast wheeling and have run trails from Telico to New Hampshire and lots in between. I am used to putting my truck in stupid situations and positions and not horribly concerned with scraping some rust off. However I will be driving the 4400+ mile round trip in my 80 pulling my M416, so I'd rather not destroy my ride.

She's well armored, 36" TSL/SX, ARB locked F/R, loaded with spares and parts. Not a lightweight vehicle by any means. Should I stick to ratings of 7 or can I do the 8?
Jon, Glad to here you're coming out. Stop by site 180 at Slickrock Campground.

Jon didn't add this but I will: he's a hell of a good driver.

:)

All the way Jon, all the way!

You say the sweetest things.
I backed down on my trail selection to 5 and 6. I don't really have any idea about the type of terrain and what to expect. I also need to factor in a 2200 mile drive home. The organizers seem to be a pretty cool bunch so if I get bored I'm sure I can kick it up a notch or 2.
As someone who has never wheeled off the eastcoast, it's difficult to make trail selections. I hope someone will be there to hold my hand and wipe away my tears.

Jon you are in for a treat.

I think you will enjoy yourself. you can actually see quite some distance around you.

I look forward to meeting you.

You won't be disappointed. Feel free to PM me with any specific questions if you want. I'm on the CM11 planning committee.

crying like a little girl... ;)

Having wheeled a little, East coast is 'bunny hop' wheeling...muddy rocks where you throttle between positions...spinning tires hit more wet stuff and keep spinning...

West coast has traction. Lots. You'll 'bunny hop' once, and then break. Two very different styles. A spinning tire will usually hit traction, and something gives...

You'll do fine. I recommend Puffs Plus tho...

I always keep Puffs in my truck. If all else fails I have Hello Kitty band aids in my first aid kit.
In any case it's sure to be an epic journey. I'll be the white FJ80 with rust holes and Jersey plates.

RIGHT ON!!!
I have never been out there either, but I will run anything with you Jon. (this time you wear the skirt) :D

You rolling solo or what?
Martin

Anyone heading from Greeley, Co? Thinking about ordering a set of Skid plates for my rig from Bump It Offroad and wanted to see if anyone wanted to carry them out for me?

Thanks!

Wazzup Scooter,

Still moving forward with this. Looks like I'm running solo this time. Tried real hard to get Josh to come with me, but he's got alot going on those 2 weeks.
All fluids changed, exhaust leaks fixed, engine tune-up done, rear drive shaft out getting balanced, new speakers done. Only thing left to do on the truck is brakes and brake fluid and maybe clean up the interior a bit.
M416 is getting new military tires and tubes in a week or so.
Still working on timing my route correctly so I arrive in Kansas City in time for dinner. Already found the rib joint. I downloaded every Starbucks in the continental US into my GPS.
Borrowed a nice Canon SLR with a few lenses from a friend, so I can document my journey.
I guess I'm almost ready, but I'm sure I'm missing some stuff.
Looking forward to seeing you in a new setting.

Yipee - first time I get to attend this event! I am stoked!!!

Leaving the OC Saturday at 0 dark hundred and will take the weekend to drive into Breckenridge for a long overdue visit with my mother. Shoot, 700 miles to the Moab exit and 260 further to Breck, so why not!

I'll be leaving Breck early Wednesday morning hopeing to arrive at Slickrock early afternoon.

Will be pulling my renovated M101CDN. She finally has a lid on her, so my gear is secure and won't get soaked in the rain! Not looking forward to the gas bill tho!

If you can get them from Greeley to Breckenridge, I'll be happy to bring them up.

It'll be rough pulling that trailer up the passes, but I'm sure it'll be worth it :)

She's just the little quarter ton variety, so even fully loaded, probably won't weight more than 12-1500 lbs.

I've pulled a 4000 lb trailer and a cruiser full of boy scouts up to 4500 ft and know how slow I was going then. Not your altitudes for sure, but the M101CDN doesn't weigh nearly as much.

The only real pass you'll have is Vail Pass. Depending on your gearing/tire combo I'll predict 35MPH up that towing. Otherwise you won't see much extra with your side trip to Breck.

Yep - driven that pass a few times while out there. Last time was with a stock truck and no trailer.

Still run stock gearing, but 285's. I can deal with 35 mph on that pass. :D It's a fairly flat approach in thru Grand Junction to Vail. We'll see how quickly the ECU adapts to the altitude with a truck that's lived it's life of luxury at sea level!

Thanks!
