my cruise control was cutting off when i would set it at highway speeds. I would get up to speed, and then set the cruise but the cruise light would flash and then cut off until i would turn the truck off and back on. I was having trouble with a faulty brake fluid resevoir sensor that would result in the brake light turning off and on randomly. So, with advice from this board i just unplugged the thing. That seemed to fix the problem, but on the way to and from the beach last weekend i would set the cruise and it would cut off. I would then pull off onto an offramp and turn the truck off and then back on. Get up to speed again, set the cruise, same thing.....flashing light, then cut off. Do you all think that this could be a dirty throttle body causing this? Or perhaps i need a new throttle or cruise control cable. Any suggestions?

Concrete,

Search on this subject for a thread with posts from me and our intrepid Cdan for a fix. It's worked for me.

Short version from me - pop the black plastic cover off the cruise control module on the PS of the truck in the engine bay. Wiggle/move the lever to the throttle back and forth a couple dozen times to clean the contacts.

I was experiencing the same problem and this 'fix' has worked for me. Better than the mega$$$ to repalce the cruise control module. I asked the msrp and smart shopper price and you don't want to know either one. Even if the module failed completely, I can drive with my foot for a LONG time before replacing that part.

The brake warning light has nothing to do with the problem. You might try the conection at the controller. It's mounted on the side of the steering column against the firewall. My plug came loose and it wopuldn't turn on at all. If it's a system problem the cruise light flashes and will give a code to the error. Because the light turns off I think you have a power problem to the controller.

thanks guys, i'll search and try the brentbba fix.

no error, just flashes off and on and then just cuts off. Pushing the off/on cruise button does not turn it back on until i turn the truck off and back on. Last night i had to stop the truck 3 friggin times until it set and worked the rest of the 30 miles home.

Those are the EXACT symtoms I had, repeat HAD. It has reoccured after the simple fix, so I just repeat the Cdan fix and it starts working again.

Good Luck!!

That Cdan fix worked for me. Several thousand miles of cruise operation now without a cutout. Same symptoms. Laughably simple fix.

I had a similar problem with my 94. It ended up being a set of contacts in the module. In the following pic the red circle is the contacts that gave issue. They were always closed, they are supposed to be open when the system is not activated. All I had to do was adjust the contacts to be open when deactivated and closed when needed and that was it.

Good luck

Another possibility is the wiring to the ECM behind the glove box shorting out because of the wires getting damaged as it passes through some of the sheet metal. This was posted by Jon Pace on 80's Cool

This is why I like it here. Someone always has the same problems as me, but, doesn't forget to ask the board. :D

i appreciate all the tips. It was dumping rain yesterday, and i don't have a garage. So hopefully today i will try the fix and post back.

I am still in awe........might take awhile to recover.

I have owned my 95 now for 4 years, 3 where the cruise didn't work..... I replaced the cc module ($15 ebay) spent $80 at a Toy dealership for troubleshooting, both with no luck. Probably personally spent 3-4 hours electrical troubleshooting....

I join this forum a month ago (never new it existed). Remove cc plastic cover, wiggle the cable 20 times, hit it with WD40 and it's a miracle! It's healed! It "Cruises" again..

I bow to the FJ80 gods. I never would have believed it, sounded almost too funny to try......

Funny to see this old post back.....but, i did find out that i had a huge amount of slack in my CC cable. Tightned it up and also looked inside the module, little wiggle here and there, little shot of WD and we are cruising!
