My '98 Hilux is a "kf-ln172-h-crmqs" model w/5L diesel

I am in the USA.

I have been looking online for various aftermarket add-ons/etc. (bumpers, racks, etc.) and not having much luck for US sellers. If sellers sell anything at all, it is usually for 2000+ year models of Tacoma/Tundra. If they do sell anything for pre-2000 Toyota PU, is is usually '95 and later Tacoma. Very few sell anything for pickups before '95, and if they do, it is almost never for a Hilux, usually just the US config PU.

So, I am wondering about what things I can fit to my Hilux that are from other models commonly offered in the USA?

Specifically:

1) Front and rear bumpers (I would like to get an ARB or TrailGear). I want a front bumper that allows for a winch and a rear bumper that has a 2" hitch receiver.

2) I want some aluminum skid plates for the drivetrain.

3) Suspension kits (I am leaning towards Terrain Tamer, but would like to know what else could work). Not interested in more than 2" lift. Would also like to know about shocks - specifically, i.e., are the shocks the same as the US "mini" pickups?

4) CV joints/axles. Rear axles (I want to run full floating rear axles with locking hubs so I can flat tow the pickup). Front locking hubs; my Hilux has the auto locking axles and I want to go to manual locking hubs. Also, lockers - front & rear (shouldn't be too hard to find, but want to be sure).

TIA

Pretty sure it is torsion
then you are looking for 86-95 us parts
you will want to measure the rear spring length because there are two in us market. 47/52. the longer spring is 89+ in the us.
bumpers and things should also be 89+ to match your body style.

I also own a '92 US config PU (also an XCab), so it sounds like I can just compare much of the measurements on that to my Hilux?

imo, there is a bit of a misconception that the international trucks are a completely different vehicle from the US market. when in reality it's pretty much just the diesels and rhd aspect.
there is a lot more overlap than people seem to think.
good luck with your build.

I suspected and hoped as much. Most of the exterior measurements are the same. The cab is a smidgeon longer, primarily the "extra" portion of it, and it doesn't have the ridge across the top that the US config does.

Mostly, I am hoping to get some of the mechanical parts from US sellers of those - the few sellers who have stuff for pre-Tacoma/T100 rigs.

FWIW - I initially was thinking of selling the red US pickup and using the $ to start the build on the Hilux. I only paid $5600 for the red pickup 12 years ago, then added the Tacoma wheels/tires for $250 (IIRC) - so I don't have much into it. The engine is tired (240K miles) and the clutch is slipping badly (it wasn't when I bought it). But I decided I probably couldn't get much for it with the clutch bad, and that if I had the clutch replaced I could give it to my kids (who sorely need a second vehicle as a backup for their Audi SUV, and could use a pickup as a utility vehicle instead of asking to borrow mine).

I intend to keep that monstrous canopy and build upon it for camping/overlanding/etc., and eventually tow it behind my flatbed truck ('97 Ram 3500 4WD with Cummins & 12' flatbed cab chassis DRW) which I intend to also build upon.

looking at the fender profile of your hilux, it looks like it shares lines with the early tacoma.

Kinda hard to compare with the fender flares on the Hilux possibly changing the outline of wheel wells, plus mine has the grill guard which obscures some of the shape at the front of the front fenders. But the fenders of the Tacoma seem to have a more rounded shape, especially the front.

I intend to remove the running boards and replace them with rock sliders. I don't intend to do hard off-roading with the pickup - rather I would use a dirt bike or an ATV of some sort. However, I do want more protection for the pickup body, and I don't think the running boards provide that - I think they would just get torn off and possibly damage the rocker panels in the process.

subtle, but that cab is definitely a bit longer.
does it have a real bench in back or just the pad mounted to the cab back?

the front fenders and grille section i imagine would interchange. fender break line is definitely different. but note the door profile.
the fascia of that era here definitely look more like your 92. none of the plastic headlight bs and similar grille.

The Hilux has two glove boxes on the passenger side, airbag in the steering wheel, but AFAIK not on the passenger side. I read somewhere that passenger airbag is an option for the Hilux. Mine also has ABS, A/C, electric windows and door locks. The window for the XCab portion has dark tint - not sure if that is stock or not.

The front of the Hilux:

That guard will be coming off and I will replace it with a bumper that accommodates a winch and preferably a skid plate. Maybe an ARB or TrailGear bumper. The TG front bumpers also have an option for a hitch receiver. I would have either front bumper modified to be really stoutly attached; if I need to be recovered from being stuck I don't want the bumper yanked off, and I want to flat tow the pickup too.

The Montana plates will be replaced soon as OR DMV sends my new ones.

Rear has a weird hitch receiver which I can't find any info on, and I am going to R&R with something that has a better exit angle, and has a square receiver. Probably a bumper with a swing away spare tire carrier/etc., and really stout attachments for recovery.

the xtra cab is not really a thing here. pretty much all dual cab.
Yeah, XCab is popular in the USA, not so much anywhere else.

Almost all of the Hilux PUs I saw for sale anywhere were dual cab, some regular cab, and XCabs were rare - I've only seen 2-3 for sale in the USA.

I absolutely wanted the XCab as all the dual cabs had a much shorter bed. I want to haul a dirt bike/ATV without having the tailgate down, and I want the canopy on and locked up if I am hauling a dirt bike (I don't want to temp any low lifes while parked in a city) - not sure I could get an ATV inside the canopy though. I am 6'6" tall, so the more space for sleeping inside the canopy the better. As far as I can tell, the wheelbase is the same for the dual cab and XCab.

The extra cab portion of both PUs have a two bottom cushion rectangles and a less padded rectangle across the back of the cab. There is a storage area beneath the seats on the Hilux.

it "appears" the hilux didn't get struts until 05
I just bought some Tacoma wheels from a local who is parting out a Taco. He looked at my front suspension and said it was quite different from the Tacoma.
