Driving the crockpot home today and it started making a weird vibration then just died on me. Got it off to the side of the road, tried to start it a few times and all it would donis thunk. Power to the starter, but not rotation. Good power at the battery, no blown fuses, checked grounds. Everything looked good. Took the spark plugs out tried to rotate it and it wouldn't budge, took the bell-housing cover off and tried to use a pry bar to turn it and it wouldn't budge either. Drained the oil and it was low, but doesn't seem like it would be low enough for a starvation issue. I cant think of anything else it would be other than it being seized up.

Thoughts on other possible issues?

Was there metal or any bearing material in the oil? Could be a spun bearing. Your next step may be to drop the pan and see what you find.

No visible metal in oil, going to drop the pan this weekend and see what we got. Anyone got a 2f lying around.....like the one I sold last year. 🙁

See if it spins cold. Or if you can rotate it with a wrench on the crank nut. If you can't rotate it by the crank nut shes an anchor now.

Any chance you could get ahold of a borescope camera to check the condition of the cylinder wall of number 4?

Edit: ...or the other cylinders for that matter.
With the cap off i can push up on the cylinder up, the walls look ok. If i can get the upper bearing on 4 off im gonna try to throw a new one on and hope for the best. At this point its worth a try

Sounds like a plan. Send it!

I have a borescope if you need one.

Oof.

I'd try a new rod bearing too if it were my motor. Do your best to clean out the oil galley on that part of the crank before you do tho. Meaning the hole in the crank that supplies oil to that rod bearing. It's probably full of metal. Give yourself the best chance of resurrecting it.

The crank looks kinda rough, but how it looks doesn't really matter. After cleaning it with scotch brite (all the way around) to get the babbit off, meaning the old rod bearing off, your finger nail will tell you the story better than your eyes can.

Please keep us posted on how this goes. I love giving new life to ****ed engines. I heard that the rusted seized 22r in booger that @Hokie LX and Brian had was put back on the road after a dingle ball treatment. That engine should have been an anchor too, lol.

Also, how did you figure out it was the #4 rod bearing? Did you take them out one by one till you found the ****ed one or did you deduce that one somehow?

All to say, I feel for you Patrick, but rushing will get you back on the road quick. Get another engine lined up, but he (we) will help you get that motor turning again soon.

When i dropped the pan and i started looking, number 4 looked real dry and it was the only one that didn't have a little play between the rod and bearing. Once the cap came out the whole assembly was able to rotate.

When I bought the truck from Dave it came with the original 2f that was in the CP. I sold it to Fred, but it sounds like he's willing to get it back to me. Will keep everyone updated.

Wait... is that the my old 2F then @roadstr6 ? I'd be really surprised... that engine only had about 95k original when I sold it to Meatball, so unless it got put in a commuter somewhere in the last decade, it's a low mileage, well maintained 2F.

No, Ramon. The engine that you sold Meatball got passed along to me and it sat on a stand in my shop for several years. I passed it along to Patrick as a spare when I sold him the Crockpot. He sold it and he’s trying to buy it back now.

Actually, the spare engine that came with the Crockpot was Ramon’s @mtweller. Forrest @forrest5000 ended up with the original Crockpot engine somehow because he offered it to me. I declined, knowing I had Ramon’s freshy 2F waiting in the wings if I ever needed it. I think the original Crockpot engine was in need of a rebuild.

Most of this stuff im doing is the first time in my life Im working on stuff like this. Once i realized the bearing was still on the crank I was able to pry both half's off. Im not sure with the way the crank looks that putting a new bearing on is going to work. There is a lot of bearing material still on the crank. Connecting rod is in great shape though.

maybe high grit emory cloth? it can wrap around the journal and be worked back and forth. i'm not optimitic of the longevity of that polish and send it methodology, but it's low cost and high reward if it even gets you a few thousand miles.

I am with Ramon, emery cloth to remove the galling. Then see the damages. Remove another bearing to see if much of the debris made it through the oil system.

Looking for confirmation that 13202-60011 is the correct part number for the bearing set?
