We all talk about how our 80 performs off road, but it still shines in its most important attribute...

SAFETY!

Pederson Toyota gave us our next quote which sounds more realistic to me. They found a lot more things that were wrong, which is getting a bit scary on the whole value.

$5118.19

Looks like they're charging you close to full retail on all the toyota OEM parts, bummer :frown:. Not even a 10% discount on parts??

To bad you can't order the parts they need through Cdan . You could probably knock off $1000 just in parts savings.

like I said. Looks like a total. blue book is probably around $6500. You are around 80% value for the repair. That should easily be considered a total. Might be better to go with the lower quote if you want it fixed. Still might be totaled at that value. This is why I fear letting my 16 year old daughter driving my cruiser. Safe for her in an accident, but kiss the truck goodbye in a small fender bender. If you have a good relationship with your insurance rep I would ask some questions about how much value a repair holds before it is considered a total. Keep us posted.

Thats the whole problem, we are dealing with someone elses insurance. Our State Farm insurance would have had this all taken care of, but it's hard just to get someone to call me back from their insurance. It's like Auto Owners Group?

If it's totalled, then so be it. I just don't want a cheap repair with crappy aftermarket parts if that makes sense. It was a very clean 80, but a 1996 vehicle with 170K doesn't have a bunch of value.

Someone hit my wife's accord last year while it was parked (she caught him as he was trying to put the wheel back on to drive away.) There was not a lot of noticeable damage, but something didn't look right about it. After spending a few weeks dealing with the guy's no name insurance my State Farm agent finally told me to just turn the claim over to them. I paid the deductible, they fixed the car with all new parts replacing several tweaked suspension parts that the other company wouldn't admit were bent($2500 vs $500 from the other ins.). They collected the repair costs + my deductible from the other company in a couple of weeks and sent me a check. I would consider turning it over to your insurance and letting them deal with the other company, basically one phone call and you are done with it.

If I were in those shoes.. Its a used truck so used parts in good shape are fine with me but the stock bumper sucks even when its not damaged. I would DIY it for the most part. I'd order a ARB maybe from tellico4x4 like I did when my stocker got tweeked by a low speed impact with bambi.

I'd look for the same color in online salvage yard parts system and get the fender and front panels. If I cant find the color I'd pay a body guy to shoot them to match before I installed them. Since its just the frame horns I would get the factory body specs out. If the frame is bent it is not by much and confined to the front horns so I would get a long machinists rule out and measure the front to see how far it is out of wack. If its just pushed in to the center a bit I would rent a porta-power hydraulic ram and spread the horns untill the ARB slipped on.

Too much work, find an auto body place you can work with, and they can work out an ARB bumper in the deal..... Now you know the high end of the repair comes at $5K, there is room to negotiate.

well so far i havent gotten a full estimate. The truck hasnt been pulled apart yet so it may go up from here. this definitely isnt my first rodeo on insurance claims, just my first when someone else is footing thebill :)

the bumper is like the cheapest part, not sure how im going to swing a 750 bumper for 350ish on the estimate.

True, but it is all a matter of what Kind of profit-minus a $800 bumper the auto body guy is willing to make ;)

FJBen:
Like I stated before... The bumper and end pieces add up to around 700... and that's not including prep/paint. So have him order the ARB and it will wash out and be a better deal for the bodyshop since he'll still pocket prep/installation... and no paint (unless you want the ARB to match).

As for my truck, it should be ready by Tuesday  and he's touching up some paint on the rear bumper where the wifey didn't see where she was backing into ;-(

I figured the ARB Slee shortbus was worth getting over OEM anyday.

If you are having issues with their insurance, contact yours to dela with it like the guy above stated. That's why you pay them monthly....

You'll recoupe your deductible....

Well, the overall deal is that it's totalled. It honestly doesn't look that bad nor does it drive different. We'll probably buy it back and I'll try and clean it up/fix it. I imagine we'll buy the wife a 100 series.

I think you need a second opinion on this.....My wife rearended someone on the interstate last summer and caused $8,500.00 damage to the front end. I thought it should have been totaled, but insurance paid for it. Adjuster told me that our vehicle was worth $14,000. It's a 97 with 130,000 miles on it. The damage looks a lot worse than yours. Just my .02....Matt

Yeah, it's crazy but the value on these have dropped greatly. Bluebook on a 96 with 170K is $7997. It doesn't take much denting/scratches to mess that up.

They may tell you the value of your 97 is 14,000 but there is NO WAY you would get that for a stock 80 unless it had 50K or less miles. NADA clean retail for a 97 is $9775. Around here you can find them easily under 10K all the time.

They just aren't worth what they used to be so I'm surprised insurance was that high of priced on them. A lot of the downfall/cost is fixing paint/blending. There are quite a few scracthes that can't be buffed out from the glass of the other ladies car. So you end up having to repaint and blend A LOT of the cruiser, not too mention there's not a whole lot of aftermarket parts/panels. It adds up really quick.

if you haven't already, I'd suggest you hand it over to your insurance company and let them take care of it. They'll subrogate the claim and you'll get your deductible back.

The fact of the matter is that the other insurance company's only interest in you is in stalling you as long as possible, paying you as little as possible, and getting clear of you as quickly as possible. Your insurance company, on the other hand, wants you happy and healthy so you can keep sending them money for a very long time.

Money which, incidentally, is paid just so you have professionals on your side when something like this happens. The other insurance company loves that you're going it alone with them. They handle this kind of thing all the time and know all the rules and just how far they can bend them and just which ones they can break without consequence.

Well I got mine back from the shop and the Slee SHortBus looks GREAT!!! The only caveat is that I wished I read the FAQ about the shorter AC Reciever/Drier for easier consealment DOH!
But my body shop sprayed everything all black behind the bumper to help disguise all the metal...

I believe the OEM Bumper is around $1,800. An aftermarket bumper is cheaper and it does not have to be painted ... which makes it even cheaper yet.

The stock bumper does not need to be painted either.

In my case, if I went with the stock bumper, it had to be prepped and painted to match the LX450 trim. Like I stated in my earlier post the bodyshop guy stated it was about $750 just for the front bumper parts without prep/paint. So the Slee Shortbus was $1150 shipped and was EXACTLY what I wanted :D

FJBens smashed bumper is the color they come from the factory.
