The crankshaft pulley on my '87 FJ60 has come apart. It's the 3 groove pulley that has the 2 smaller diameter pulleys riveted to the larger pulley that runs the AC compressor and is secured directly to the crankshaft. All 6 rivets completely snapped and to be honest, I can't imagine how it was ever secured anyway as the holes in the double pulley are sort of oblong, not round.

Anyway, my question to the gurus out there, is there any reason why I should not just take the harmonic balancer (large pulley) off the shaft and take it along with the double pulley to a machine shop and have it welded together? Money is real tight right now and it's my only transportation so I need to get it back together soon. The best price I found on a replacement is $150.

Any advice would be appreciated.

No direct experience on this exact problem but your fix sounds OK to me. Make sure they center them on a lathe before/while welding & check the runout on the accessory pulleys so you know they're true.

There's a recent thread about removing the balancer (supposedly not easy).

The holes are oblong probably because it wobbled before it broke.

Thanks for the input. About the oblong thing, that occured to me but the rivets left in the main pulley appear to be roughly 8mm and the oblong holes in the double pulley are roughly 16 or 17 mm and are all the same size. There is some wear around the one edge of each hole where it was definitely wobbling a bit, but it's hard to imagine those holes being bored out that much, but certainly possible.

Yeah, I've done a search about pulling that balancer and I predict a very leisurely, aggravation free weekend:crybaby:
