If you end up designing a crane post a picture of the design here. I'd like to see it.

is the other one that is neat.

Chris,
Thanks, that's another worthy addition.

Somewhat more heavy duty, but if you're moving an engine or something else heavy, that would be up to the task with a 900 lb capacity -- unless it's a LandCruiser motor, which I think is somewhere north of that number.:p

Still, it'll grapple with most anything you can actually carry in a 1/4 ton trailer.

Trying to recall his user on Expi, but there's a thread over there where a guy cut into the side of the M1XX trailer behind the front bulkhead and fwds of the tires on the driver's side and made a pull-out kitchen. He made the cut carefully and used to cut-out panel as the end-cap.

ntsqd,
Yeah, that one sounds familiar.

Somehow I just got this vision of a kitchen totally taking over a 1/4 ton trailer if I built it in. Which would be cool if I wanted a portable kitchen. If it's not removable, I'm liable to just fill it up.:hillbilly:

Jeff,
Thanks. Very interesting idea, except my low-clearance garage door negates the idea of putting anything on the roof of the truck. However, that crane would work great to service the trailer. I could also see hunters making use of it to bring home the meat.:D

I would think the HF crane with a receiver tube mounted to the frame going straight up would solve the issue. Mount a ball mount size tube to the cranes bottom and you could make it as tall as you want.
The frame mount would be low enough to keep you from needing a new window.

Many years ago my grandfather modified his engine hoist with a hand-crank cable winch. He fabricated a pulley with cable guides onto the end of the boom. So now instead of the boom simply going up and down you can also crank the cable in and out. This has come in exceptionally handy when a true vertical movement is necessary. I don't think that I have a pic of it, or I'd post it.

Seems to me that for your needs a moving boom wouldn't be necessary if you had the cable winch. Just make the boom rotatable. HF sells cheap winches: http://www.harborfreight.com/1000-lb-capacity-hand-winch-65688.html
