There are sealed battery boxes available from folks like Summit Racing that are gasket sealed and provide a vent tube to the outside. Seriously, look into one. Love ya man.

Thanks all. Appreciate the advice. I know it's well-intentioned. I just think it's funny that I did something so terribly pathetic that I am getting safety jabs from guy who broke his leg trying to be spider man and also the guy who starts welding flash fires in his carport chop shop. :)

In all seriousness, we all learn things the hard way sometimes. I come from a boating background and have rigged up tons of dual battery systems on boats. Much like the marine world, there are things that don't translate well from one setting to the other (like auto carbs In a a boat motor). Having done this numerous times, I just sort of defaulted to a setup that has served me well in the past. As far as safety goes, the hot lines are fused and so is the power circuit to to the fridge. I didn't think the fumes was that big of an issue, but I certainly take your word for it.

And for what its worth, the list of dumbasses that have done this doesn't start with me. While Range Rover engineers are far from brilliant, they have batteries in the cab (albeit vented). A guy did this over on the 120 thread and his mod is what inspired my foolishness:

GX470 - Weekend Overland Build

Also, here is a thread on expedition portal discussing this.

Mounting a Battery Inside The Cab. Any real downsides?? [Archive] - Expedition Portal

End of discussion, though. Points made and well taken and I'm going to act on it. Maybe I'll go bump the fashion thread so I can get back in good standing.

Let the record show that I place safety third, behind gittin'r'dun and whatever is second. And I have the scars to prove it:D

I've owned a few cars with batteries under the back seat but they are always vented. Not trying to come down hard on anyone. The fix is simple and your plan is sound. Go for it and tell us all to shut up. :)

Strep... Who gets that when a trip is coming up? Listen, my rule is that you and the family go into a quarantine about a week out from any important trip. No unneeded contact with sickly folks, no kids riding bikes, climbing trees, jumping on trampolines or anything that might land them in the emergency room.

but IF I invited you to go out to a strip club you would throw that whole plan out the window...

Well, I mean, sometimes you have to take a chance. THAT would be a "special ops" type deal there!

Run PMc came up with a brilliant fix for his battery fumes

I'll keep my big mouth shut next time. Carry on.

...and diving boards.

@Bossman and others. Please don't have any reservations about speaking up. That's part of the reason I posted it (to get a sanity check before driving 1000 miles into the middle of nowhere). Your advice was not critical and was intended to keep me and others out of harms way. I improved the set up based on your feedback -- swapped out for a gel battery, sealed the box and vented it out the floor (it's still not ideal or best practices, but it works and it's safer now). Other than being hooligans and clowns, that is the purpose of a group/club. I was not butt hurt and I was poking fun at myself with the mask. Now, we are off to big bend!
