One thing of note is that the Costco oil does not seem to come in a synthetic high mileage variant. Is anyone concerned about that? I have been using high mileage Valvoline full syn oil in my 80 Series and it has reduced the minor leak I have, and otherwise works well. If the users on this board are planning to drive their 200 series for many years, why not use a high mileage oil? That is the reason I have not switched to the Costco oil. I'd rather pay a bit more for an additive package intended for higher miles engines (not longer oil change interval, mind you).

The additive package in HM oils has seal modifiers in it designed for engines that will benefit from restored pliability and “expansion” to prevent leaks.

2UZ and 3UR have no such seals. Zero benefit to run a HM oil, at any mileage.

All of this can't be said enough. Seal swellers may slow or stop a leak, but in doing so they make the rubber prone to wearing even more quickly. Other than potentially slowing a leak, there is nothing in a high mileage oil that is necessary beyond what a modern synthetic changed often enough can do. 99.9% marketing hype.

That's interesting. Posts on Bob Is The Oil Guy have led me to believe that HM oils contain more detergents, reducing sludge build-up more than non-HM oils. I'm no expert, just reporting what I have read.

I'm glad you mentioned BITOG. A thread 1/257:

jk

You can do some deep dives over there. IIRC, they go into who (typically) makes the Kirkland oil and compare it to other majors. Project farm on YT may have also dome some sort of tournament type of video including it.

Routine oil changes are THE BEST preventative measure towards sludge accumulation. Not HM oil. Toyota V8s don’t sludge if maintained.

what oil is that?

Saw the Kirkland Oil on sale in store for $29.99/10 quarts.

Note: They now stock a High Mileage variant. Caution buying this. Recommend you get the regular 5w-30 or 0w-20.

Kirkland Signature motor oil, sold at Costco, is manufactured by Warren Oil Company (formerly Warren Distribution).
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Manufacturer: Warren Oil Company.
Other Brands: Warren Oil also produces other private label brands, including Amazon Basics, Walmart's SuperTech, and Mag 1.

Project farm did a review on the Amazon basics oil for sure (and I think the costco too?) and his somewhat scientific comparisons made out fairly well against a lot of the other big box/retail outlet common oils. Not trash oil by a long shot, but also not as good as some options that are considerably more expensive.

:wrench:nothing less than nectar from the gods for my vehicles!

Heading to Costco in a few hours. I'll skip the hotdogs.:meh:

Who doesn't love a sale on cheap oil?
Big oil pans, 5k mile OCI's: my LC's will outlive my best before date by...

I think it’s actually cheaper online than in-store. So maybe it’s still worth the trip for the hot dog and soda..?

In Dhaka, Karachi, Nairobi, and Dammam - where I have lots of experiences with LCs... no Costco there.. No bob is the oil guy there..half the time no internet there... the MP and CEO don't care.. the "drivers" of these vehicles.. who make $150 a month doing 12-14 hour shifts, no holidays.... "maintain" them to the best of their ability...

In Mecca, these are idling along with many 70 series, 24 hours a day with AC on for 2-3 years at a time..guarding all the mosques.. same in Meenah.. trucks stay running in place with AC on, trucks never move, the "police" inside change shifts and sleep inside...

And the trucks are running great.... for millions of miles

One might ask, if they never move, how do they travel millions of miles;)
